DIVE SAFE
« on: May 06, 2007, 06:58:10 AM »

You plan your dive and you never plan your die.

Dive safely, always remember that your gear ( equipment ) can safe your life or it can also kill you.

I don't mince words. It's the way I was trained, especially when it comes to safety aspects.

totally agree.. reading abt dive accidents and casualties are good on the positive side to create consistent awareness and precaution, though sometimes i do get uneasy n it shakes my confidence to dive. Diving is FULL of fun, but never get carried away with the fun that you forget abt rule one : safety first (at least to me)..  :)

I'd recommend a book titled "Diver Down" by Michael R. Ange. In his book he presented a number of diving accident cases, how and why it happened and how we can learn from them.

A truly good read if you're a diver with safety in mind. It's not meant to scare anyone, just that it's better to learn from other people's mistakes than make you own.

Some of the accidents he covered in his book happened to very experienced divers and instructors and technical divers.

Some of the accident scenarios portrayed, it could have happened to anybody e.g. there's one case where a diving accident happened to an Open Water student during Open Water Dive No.4. I read the case times and times again and every time, I thought, "that could happen to my student".

Aiyah, enuf "teaser" already lah. U folks no cheapo-cheapo type lah...so go out and buy the book yourself...I bought mine at Kino, I think.

Another, more serious read would be the DAN (Divers' Alert Network) "Australian Dive Fatality Report"....but I don't think that would make such an easy read for most people  :-/.

DAN also produced another excellent book, albeit more technical. Its titled "Deeper Into Diving" and has excellent technical background into diving, recreational and technical. Also, a bit of a heavy read.

What kind of fish you are talking about? If those small coral fishes that can find in aquarium trade(I know you guys might not like this), these books quite ok:

1) Scott W. Michael(2001) A Pocket Expert Guide - Marine Fishes, T.F.H. Publication, NJ, ISBN 1-890087-38-6.

2) Scott W. Michael(2005) Reef Aquarium Fishes, T.F.H. Publication, NJ, ISBN 1-890087-89-0

As for coral, try this:

Ronald L. Shimek (2004) Marine Invertebrates, T.F.H. Publication, NJ, ISBN 1-890087-66-1

thanks for the leads but i am not into aquarium.. i am into south china sea coral and fish book loh... i saw it in 1 Utama.. but they are selling at RM180.00. Not to say its expensive but its not worth it i think. If RM100 then can buy lah... because the book also quite old. My friend got 1 about nudibranchs all over the world and it cost RM300. That 1 is worth it because the materials and picture quality is very nice. SOmetimes sell also see quality lah.

I know you not going for aquarium fishes, but these book will cover 70-80% fishes what you can see in a dive. The Marine Invertebrates even cover shrimps, nudi, crabs, corals & etc. Anyway, this is just a suggestion, no worries!
