pro doesn't use weight at all
if he/she can control her body in da water
I do (use weights)
And I can (control my body).
Mostly it depends on the individual when it comes to pros. Easiest part of waterskills assessment for me at the pro level was floating (even with hands out of the water for the last two minutes) but I see lots of people struggle with it.
But back to the OP's question: now you know about the ears. The easiest way to hurt your ears by descending fast is head down along an anchor or buoy line. You get worried that you'll hold up traffic if you let go one hand to equalize. If you have current and a liine to descend, there's no need to get down fast. Take your time and equalize properly.
If you are worried about a current and you don't have a line to go down, the only kind you can manage with a rapid descent is a surface current, and the way to get past one of those is to do a negative entry, with your BCD empty of air. Splash and descend; no waiting at the surface for everybody.
Caveat: I've never dived in a river, but I've heard those currents are a bit different to deal with.
