The sad truth of commercial diving
« on: July 07, 2008, 04:35:39 PM »

Hai all,

I came across this article over the web when I try to look for more information on offshore work. This story happen at labuan. Is this true??? "The commercial diving industry are dominated by Filipinos who would be pretty happy to work for $50 a day"

http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Malaysia/Sabah/Labuan/blog-75722.html

And I came across few oversea commecial forum giving many negative point of view about commecial diving industry.

http://www.ukdiving.co.uk/forums/topic.php?t_id=577

Those article and forum really worry me alot. I going to take my ADAS part III course this coming October. Please advice. Thank.

Regards,
Adrian Chua

I know it is disheartening after reading all those comments...

I am new diver slowly making my round of pilgrimage of sending resumes, calling and visiting them...but I know..one day eventually..someone somewhere...there bound to be a spot opening up for me...but until then...back to work (sending resume and calling that is..:)

welcome bro...:)

that's sad.. but there is no diving union nor diving association in malaysia. like australia, ADAS control of everything. Most of the company willing to take local diver.. but problem is client not willing to pay more.. and resulted in recruiting foreign diver... so sad to hear it..

spazm, you new diver and still looking for job? me too.. calling and sending resume.. just took my petronas safety passport course.. make myself available for petronas job

I'm not too good with computers so i just went to the thread and copied the http thing.

If it doesn't work, just go to offshore and look for topic called "list of commercial diving companies"

more info on diving companies can found at http://www.longstreath.com

me and spamz seems to having problem looking for job. I just wonder how a client normally deal with diving company? Coz there are few jobs before and i called to offer myself. Alas, they always looking for experienced diver because that's the requirement of client.

I don't mind at all working as tender or other running deck job as i know i'm new to this industry and you can't dive directly. From what i experience, if you have what they always call 'cousin' working as a diver, the more chance he can pull you in..

like my friend no experience what so ever, been to Dubai for a project because his cousin pull him along. Another 3 of us, with no 'cousin', still working hard in looking for job.  :laughing11: :laughing11: hope to get one soon!! surface surface.. diver 1 is boring  :smileinbox:

Talking about unions, I seem to recall a certain CD here who was mobbed, then demobbed a week later because union from a certain country got their way and grabbed all the jobs on the barge. He had a 4-month "holiday" after that doing marketing...of himself  :D :D :D :D :D :D

You guys might want to think of doing inspections later...I don't know how many more projects will last in this region.  And local companies are hiring more and more BERNAS-qualified divers cos it's cheaper.

To new divers dont worry about not getting the jobs. just be patient a little bit.
TIMES WILL COME.  :clock: cos we got no uncle in there, that the way we will survive....................  :smileinbox:  :( :( :(
During my days I see no Philipinos being an offshore diver<maybe lot in M/East>,all whites, we work hard to be among the best working divers. when the names is there people will look for you.  :icon_salut: : :icon_salut  than :icon_rr: :icon_rr: than  :D :D :) :) :)
If you still inshore get the book about 'rigging'. read it, teach you how to play with rope/wire,  its help a lots. :stfu:
Remember this "GOOD DIVER IS A GOOD RIGGER".  -harley-

Good luck to you all. -gluck-

Adios.

Guys..keep applying & calling ok.

The 1st job is always tough but u will get there.

FYI ... Petronas dont state that the job in Malaysia Water must use Malaysian divers, so currently local diving company are importing foreign divers & not using Malaysian divers...even foreign company that got contract to work in Malaysia water.

Miri..Trengganu...etc

I wonder what are the Labour Department in Malaysia doing about it, as to work in Malaysia water they the foreigner need to have WORK PERMIT....unless is soooOOoo easy for them to give work permit to foreigner.

I know few local divers do complain to the labour office....hehehehehehe.

Anyway hang on there, lets work together to make a change.

Sarku...Offshore Works Subsea...Allied Marine...Alam Hydro....do have work running in Malaysia right now & require CD .... keep calling & let them know U r Local divers.

Good luck & hope to meet up sometime soon ..... KEEP TRYING!!!!!
