Actually la...in a way..kan? Kalau kerja kat darat nak kena ada OSHA, kerja kat laut pun kena ada OSHA, even for part-timers (city-based DMs, Instructors etc) as temporary contract workers kat darat do. Baru ada standard to follow tak kira dari mana...like your job. So for your kind of job kena re-term as Commercial Saturation Divers.

But as for this topic, kita stick to yur kind of job so you and Bigjoe can fill in and maybe the younger divers may want to venture and feel for themselves what it is like being at sea for 90-odd days and young Indian engineers always unzipping your fly after watching blue movies  ;D :o

In general.. 2 types of Commercial Diver

1. Air Diver
- Surface Supply Limit up to 50m on air
- Helium/Oxygen are use at times

2. Saturation Diver
- 50m below & on Helium/Oxygen

Need to start as Air Diver first ..... then take another course to become Saturation Diver.

Both have Chamber, Air Diver use the chamber for treatment & Saturation diver use chamber as Living Enviroment.

Air Diver work mostly at mid water, Sat Diver work at bottom.

Air Diver have time restriction, deeper you go...less time you have on the job so you need to work fast.

Sat diver have more time ... 8-12hrs each bell run, 4-6 hours work time for Sat diver.

Will add more from time to time, this is just a general information... if you have any question, feel free to ask.

Hehee...becoming a commercial diver means diving in conditions where you DON'T get to see anything. You want to go to 50m and see wrecks, do technical diving. ;) ;D

SD. is it true that tech divers get all the rush from preparing from a dive... I mean they spend hours preparing for a short (how long is your bottom time at 50M??) excursion into the water...

What is the fun in all that?? :-?

How long? It depends on your SAC rate. If it's about 15 liters/min then the twin tanks should last you 48 minutes. However, since you have to do gas management planning plus having to spare your air for your buddy as well, then probably about 24-25 minutes tops before you start your deco stops.

What is the fun in all that? It gives you the rush...checking your equipment because your life and that of your buddy depends on YOUR equipment. You get to see wrecks of battleships and other warships that look as if time had stopped. You can imagine the crew running here and there doing damage control and at the same time being blown to bits by the bombs the Japanese aircraft drop. You can see the huge torpedo holes on the Repulse and know how it looked like as it steamed at 14 knots as it disappeared beneath the waves.

Then you start your way back to the ascent line and commence your deco stops according to your run times. Curious whale shark stop by to check you out....followed by a school of 2m Cobias...and then schools of Batfish. You reach 21m you switch to your EAN50...at 6m you switch to 100% O2 and you watch your depth...at 3m you're on the deco station breathing surface-supplied oxygen. Cool stuff.

Topside, as you relax while still breathing O2, you have a look at your camera playback, you see 15-inch guns, you see anti-aircraft guns, you see the lifeboats, you see the gigantic propellers, rudders, torpedo holes..and you smile to yourself saying, "Hah! I'm sick of looking at Nemos." ;D ;D ;D

If you do commercial diving, it'll cost you about RM80-90K. But of course you can recover that in one or to jobs. Tech diving, on average it costs you RM2K per course...starting from basic such as deco procedures, to deep air, trimix I, trimix II and trimix III.

If you decide to become an inshore commercial diver not working for anyone, you have to invest a lot in equipment. For example, one run of diver umbilical costs around RM35-40K. You will need 4 runs. Diver to diver to surface com system will set you back around RM80K. Then you have your LP and HP compressors, your portable chamber (about RM250K). A lot of investment. of course, the cheaper method is to work for others.

Tech diving, you mainly do it for fun...or you can make money from it by doing simple things like search and recovery. However, you must love diving...even if it means at Pulau Besar, PD or Port Klang.

Like I've been saying, there is no such thing as a bad dive site, there are only bad divers.

1. You need to decide if you REALLY want to be commercial diver

2. Booked for the course earliest date

3. Make sure you have Medic First Aid & O2 provider (DAN be good) ... before U go there

4. Better master the DM manual & Instructor Manual
- Be good with Decompression table ... US Navy, RN & DCIEM Table.... DM's & Instructors fail big time here
- Very good with diving EQUIPMENT, Pratical side of it ... most DMs & Instructors fail big time here.

5. Have basic knots skill
- Bowline ...reefknots...splice....back splice... eye splice.... etc

6. Do PULHEEMs/SPUMS FIT TO DIVE check .... HAT in Lumut
- They might have called it Institute Of Hyperbaric Medicine ...now
- You can check with DIVEDOC ..... he is a moderator for MUW

7. Do BOSIET (opito approve) would be great...cost more but good la
- No budget just do BOSIET at MAS building .... SeaQ

The money is OFFSHORE ..... to work offshore you would need ADAS Pt.1, Pt.2 & Pt. 3
Course Duration 3 month.

This is the website www.underwaterctr.com.au
