BUDDIES!!

With the help of other diver-cyclists, I am trying to round up cyclists who may be interested in participating in this Tree Party event Wild Asia's co-organizing with AMP Radio Networks and Friends of Kota Damansara (FOKD) this June 21st in conjunction with World Environment Day..

Date: 21 June, 2009 (Sunday)
Venue: Kota Damansara Community Forest (KDC)
Time: 8am - 5pm

It's a full day event filled with activities for all ages and it is aimed at getting urban communities to use their green space, and thereby contributing to the upkeep and overall protection of the community forest as a functional urban green lung and watershed area.

The Food Journey.

A restaurant called "I Loving Hut" in Puchong is sponsoring meals for 50 volunteers on that day of June 21st. Wild Asia's supposed to have the food picked up from that restaurant at 11am and send it to Kota Damansara Community Forest (KDCF), which can be a simple thing of driving over..

However, in the spirit of the green event and since cyclists are somewhat involved in the afternoon activities, I am keeping my fingers crossed that our crazy energetic cyclist gang would be interested to do the food pick-up instead and cycle the miles to KDCF for the delivery. That would be so much more fun!!

So, I'd be extremely delighted and appreciative if we could round up our buddies to support this green event - please please help spread the word.
1) They can cycle from "I Loving Hut" Puchong (11am) to Kota Damansara event site to do food delivery for volunteers.
2) Participate in the 2km mountain bike time trail competition (which runs from 2pm - 4pm)

It will be hot la - midday sun and all, but I'm confident we are all are built tough for this!

PLANT A TREE FOR THE PLANET

We're hoping to get 20 groups of 10 people to plant trees with AMP Radio's celebrity Deejays (see how hot and sexy they have posed for us on http://www.wildasia.net/main.cfm?page=product&productID=1341)

Targeting 200 trees, each group will consist of 9 people plus 1 celebrity deejay. Listeners will register and pledge tree on the above link with 2 options to choose from:

INDIVIDUAL TREE PLEDGE
RM50 for a tree: Entitles one person to participate in tree planting activity. The individual will also get:

   * 1 tree e-certificate as acknowledgment
   * 1 picnic gift pack
   * Privilege to sign on a banner signifying support in the building of a 2km trail

CORPORATE TREE PACKAGE
If corporates are interested in planting trees - they are most welcome to pledge!! It is RM 500 for 10 trees and it entitles 10 people to participate in the tree planting activity. They will also get:

   * Tree e-certificates as acknowledgment
   * 10 picnic gift packs
   * Privilege to sign on a banner signifying support in the building of a 2km trail

"Scout's Trail" Mountain Bike Time Trial

For the first time, a mountain bike time trial will be organised in Kota Damansara Community Forest Park. This 2km time trail will see riders bombing down the trail with 1 minute interval between riders.

Organised by Fakawi Tribe, this will be a truly exciting event. Time trial will run between 2:00 - 4:00pm.

Green Photos Please!!

Knowing full well how some of us love to take photos

Come put your top-side skills to the test...

Submit pictures of nature, the people and activities taken on that day. The competition will be on all morning and the best pictures with best description/caption will stand to win prizes. The photo competition will run from 9:00am - 12:00pm. Registration is RM10 per person - PM me if interested.

The photo competition is planned as follows:-

   * Two categories of participants - Teenagers (13 - 20) ; Adults (21 years old and above)
   * Two themes - Nature & Candid (people)
   * Each category and theme will have 3 winners (1st, 2nd & 3rd)

There is no differentiation between compact point-n-shoot and DSLR in this case as the focus is on nature and originality, not on equipment set-up...

Once I have firmed up prizes and Terms & Conditions, I will update this thread

Hey guys,

New update from Friends of Kota Damansara and PCC... The registration for the Scouts Trail TT (Time Trial, not Teh Tarik) has been closed as they already have 44 riders!!

They will push off with one-minute interval in between... blardy exciting this one - quite the adreneline rush!!!

Hello hello...

Its been quite a while since the Tree Party had happened, but I am determined to report back here on the excellent effort some of our forum-ers had put in into making the event a success

Special shout out to MUW-ians MT_Tanc, Leafbug, Rocket, Miezegreat, Yuyu and EcoDivers Tina and Wong Siu who have selflessly supported this Tree Party.

I'll also be sharing photos which Leafbug had taken (since I was busy cycling around like a headless chook, i was rendered rather useless as a camera person).

On June 21st 2009, a collaborative effort between Wild Asia, AMP Radio Networks and Friends of Kota Damansara (FOKD) saw the success of "Plant-a-Tree for the Planet" Tree Party held in Kota Damansara Community Forest (KDCF) in conjunction with World Environment Day (WED).

MT-Tanc had managed to gather a quite a few enthusiastic cyclists (some whom they've never met) to do the 25km route from Puchong's "I Loving Hut" Cafe to Kota Damansara Forest. The cafe had graciously sponsored 50 lunch packs for volunteers that day, all packed in biodegradable fibre-based packaging. So the boys (and a lady) were doing this delivery...

Because we were required to take the main road via LDP to reach KDCF, we made sure safety was of utmost priority. 2 Police outriders from Subang escorted the group all the way...

A few more kilometers before reaching KDCF, everyone stopped for a breather and to sort out the food packages...

Upon reaching KDCF, AMP Radio Network's Iza was rushing with the mic to get a few words from Reza...

People cheering... volunteers running with Revive drinks for the cyclists!!! Alhamdullillah everyone made it safe and sound.

But the main highlight of the day was the tree planting activity, seeing radio announcers from participating radio stations such as ERA, MY FM, hitz.fm, MIX fm, LiteFM, SINAR, XFM and THR Raaga planting trees with corporate and individuals who pledged trees in contribution to Wild Asia's Plant-a-Tree programme.

Mix FM's Sham and Roshan keeping energy levels up and keeping the crowd excited...

Even the kiddies were into it

Facilitated and managed by Discovery House Center, children were bonding with their natural surroundings by learning about KDCF and its green treasures

And here's the coolest bit...

After cycling the 25km to deliver food to the volunteers, they stayed back to plant the trees pledged by Korean Airline pilots (who were unfortunately airborne at the time and in many countries)... They had pledged trees in the names of their beautiful wife and children... Hence their tree plot was aptly called "The Cockpit"

The event posed a platform for us to engage the public on safeguarding our precious (and ever-shrinking) green spaces by utilising the area. Kota Damansara Community Forest is indeed unique as it is located in an urban area. The fight is on for it to be gazetted and protected from development.

Sacrificing their weekend, 80 scouts were on hand to manage the crowd. Great work, guys!

Saying 'hello' to my buddies from the Malaysian Youth Climate Justice Network gang...

Every little effort by individuals, be it tree planting or recycling at home - counts.

VIPs invited by Friends of Kota Damansara, which included the MP of Subang Mr Sivarasa, the ADUN of Kota Damansara, Dr Nasir, as well as PJ councillors, had also joined in the effort of planting trees with the public and penning their support to build and maintain the hiking/biking trails which have been well-thought through and laboriously constructed by passionate ones...

In most cases, at the end of an event we see an aftermath of rubbish as the consequence of public irresponsibility. The tree party was unique in the sense that all waste generated was weighed and calculated to understand the impact such an event can have on the environment.

Waste Management

   * Food vendors were informed to use alternative packaging that can be recycled; plastic bags to paper bags, styrofoam cups to paper cups, etc. Plastic bottles were replaced with can bottles.
   * Bins were properly labeled to help segregate waste. We had separate bins for paper, aluminum, plastics and waste/trash.
   * Alam Flora properly disposed of the waste and recyclable items were weighed and collected by recycling centers.

# Waste collected (per kg) is as follows:

   * Paper: 16.5
   * Plastic: 30.5
   * Aluminum: 15.5
   * Glass: 7
   * Other non-recyclable trash: 63.5

Total waste generated during this 1-day event, with an estimated flow of 500 visitors (we had 495 registered visitors) was 133kg. Tokitsuumi Masahiro, a former professional sumo wrestler, weighs just as much!

In wrapping up this pictorial report...

Wild Asia, AMP Radio Networks and Friends of Kota Damansara would like to extend our gratitude to our sponsors, Pepsico (M) Sdn. Bhd., Loving Hut Café, Mary Kay, Malaysian Nature Society(MNS), Discovery House Kids Training Centre, Johnson & Johnson, Corezone, Elevyn, Bandar Harapan, Hi Tech Waste Management Sdn. Bhd., Hutan Kanan Tapak Semaian Sg. Buloh, BECOME, Velocity Media Sdn. Bhd, Pal Associates as well as to our volunteers and the organizations involved for making this event, a true success...

We had approximately 495 registered participants... Through AMP Radio, we had 8 radio stations nationwide engaged in educating the public on ways to lead greener lifestyles. Over 180 volunteers braved the weather and perspired buckets to make this event a success. Volunteers came from Bangsar Zone Scouts, Red Crescent, students from SMK Sek 10, Kota Damansara, Taylor's College High Flyers Club, friends of Wild Asia and friends of AMP Radio Networks.

13 media representatives made their way to the forest - including 3 TV stations; and 14 booths were set up consisting of food vendors and eco-friendly organizations.

Once again, great gratitude goes to fellow MUWians who have selflessly supported this Tree Party..

* Rocket - for supporting Wild Asia in many ways, one of which is forsaking the cleanliness of his Hilux to transport 'pleasant' smelling compost from Bandar Harapan organic farm to KDCF...
* MT_Tanc - for rallying the cyclists for the special food delivery
* Leafbug - for braving the heat and coming out to take these wonderful photos used here in this report, despite feeling terribly sick!!! High fever and everything!
* Ecodivers - Miezegreat, Tina and Wong Siu for pledging trees and planting them
