Whats your personal bit to environment?
« on: January 13, 2008, 10:41:03 PM »

Im not sure if this is d right thread to put this, but m curious to know and to see the extent of personal involvement of MUW members to environment in general. Moderator san, pls move this to d right thread if this is @ d wrong place.

Id like to know what is your general involment in trying to make this world a better place to live in.

Scubabunny:
1) At home: Recycle paper, aluminium cans, glass, plastic bottles (all recycleble items), buy bulk items to reduce packaging / waste, switch of power when not use
2) Out and about: Bring own reusable shopping bags, refusal to / less use plastic bags/ bring own drinking bottles & cutleries out to eat (try to do more deligently this yr..  [-( )
3) Office: Encourage staffs to recycle papers by printing on both sides, encourage staff recycle items @ ofc by installing rcycle bins, started recycle batteries campaign, car pool whenever I hv d chance
4) Family & frens (if I still have any after all d above!  :D ) : Educating them on d importance of recycling esp. my younger nephew & nieces
5) Diving: If i see any divers doing their litter bug habits - I say something, If I see divers not aware of where their fins land (esp on corals) - I will say something, I see any divers touching any marine life - I say something. And I of course not litter, learn to control bouyancy, and not touchie policy on marine life, plus, If i see DC not so conservationist, I wont be a repeat customer.

I try - as much as possible to re-use & reduce resources. Only buy/ consume what I need. It my humble bit to d env. Pls take this positively, Id like to share my method with MUW members, if you hve urs pls share and I can add to my list too. Lets learn from each other.  :hello:

This is a good one!! hehe!!

Let see, mine as follows:

1. No eating sharkfin/seafood/animals. (Promote this to everyone around me)
2. Eating organic veg. (Whenever possible)
3. limit use of plastics. (Usually carry own bag when shopping)
4. Use biodegradible cleaning products.
5. Working on turtle and orangutan conservation program with wife.
6. Tryin to get MISC Berhad (subsidiary of PETRONAS) to sponsor turtle conservation education program in Terengganu & Kelantan.
7. Follow Scubabunny in most of the diving steps taken.

Why this topic has seen very little response (only 1 after the original topic starter if you do not include mine) is probably due to the fact that there is nothing to gloat about when it comes to conservation.  I am sure most divers in here do they're own bit in trying to conserve the earth, especially the marine environment; and I know of many who have not only tried to talk to sponsors, but have actually undertaken to do their stuff in a major way especially after those sponsors got themselves sold by the idea.

I think more participation can be gotten from members if the title is changed somewhat to 'Tips On Conservation For Individuals.'

I think the intention of the thread is (I could be wrong.. :$ ) to see what the individual members were involve in.

A lot like the dive equipment thread.

So ...no response might just be that there are a lot of member who are not doing anything but just watching what others do.

I do agree that a number of you are doing loads (or were.. :P ) but it seems that most of you are moderators or affiliated to MUW.

But what are the regular divers out there doing?? This MAY be what the intention was.

But like I said...I could be wrong...

Divers who are not affiliated to MUW are not members...so what's the point of asking them to list down their contribution in here?  There are many members who are actively doing something with various NGOs in here so don't look down upon them. I know of more than ten who actively particiapte in those projects but hardly talk about it in here. And none of them are mods

Thanks Demon, here a bit of environmental bits which i do as MUW member and a non-mod:-

1. Shower for less no more than 8 minutes so that I do not over-consume water.
2. Recycle non-biodegradable stuff in office (need to educate my maid and house members to do it back home. Managed to do it for a while, but house fellas got lazy).
3. Only buy clothes when I need to (I can hear spazm's sigh of relief).
4. Hover nicely over corals and implement the no-touch policy.
5. Work with corporate partners in strategising and implementing sound environmental projects which include, but are not limited to the following:-
- promote and implement the establishment of natural corridors to link fragmented wildlife habitat areas and thus support viable wildlife populations.
- preservation of Malaysia's rare and indigenous forest tree species by planting them out in conservation set-aside areas within oil palm plantations.
- reef surveys (tend to do much more this year, just wait for it!!) in collaboration with our corporate and NGO partners.
- advocacy work (meaning i research and write about issues) to highlight environmentally-disastrous or socially exploitive national projects like the dam in Pahang, or other smaller ones like the desecration of Bukit Kiara's green lung.
- carry out tree-planting events and coordinate environmental education programmes with community schools in the outback.

Guess I am a lucky member to be able to do this.

Hi, lemme answer d questions posted; Why it is named Whats you Personal Bit To env.?

1) Curious to see to what extent members of MUW / common divers do @ home or out about on env. conservation.
2) Learning from other members on their conservation activities & add to their list to do
3) Making others (who hv not started with conservation eff.) see that conservation is easy, breezy activity
4) Maybe from here on.. members would be interested to do some conservation efforts together.. (far fetched but.. its worth a try...  ;) )

those are my initial intentions. Hope dat helps.  :)  No intention on making this a contraversial topic tho..

We can always have the same effect by stating the pointers for conservation instead of "I have done this" or "I have done that."

In that line, you wouldn't put off the newbies who just began to dive and realise there are so few turtles in the Terengganu waters, or after 100 dives still not a single shark seen except those beneath corals at Tukun Laut in Perhentian.

Here's my bit..

1) I shower or use more water than I can....(the company I am in wont be to sell more chlorine to the water treament plant...thus less bonus for me)...

2) I throw thrash out my car window ...so that I know the toll I am paying is being channelled to employ more sweepers/cleaners to clean the road...(thus reducing the employment rate...

......more to come......flame on!!..:P

Spazm - i simply cannot believe you feel proud doing these things. I am not sure what you are trying to achieve by stating all this here, but it sure as hell makes you look idiotic.

Well..isn't it better to look idiotic...sound idiotic....than be an Idiot??..:)

Bring it on your wrath.....

Back to the topic...I honestly do not think I am contributing anything to the environment...every second I am alive...I actually think I put more stress to the environment more than ever....but...nonetheless...I do it unconsiously...e.g...the fuel guzzler we are driving around everyday....the chemicals we use to wash ourself..the car...the house...etc....

So ..it turn back to question of the thread itself...are we being pro-active?? or should we just go back and become cave dwellers...I think..the latter helps out the environment more..:P..

Just my 2 p.s.i. worth..

I think this section of the forum..."Environment Education"...... should be just that.

It should be for those who believe in the cause and want to do something about it.

for those who don't....by all mean contribute to other parts of this forum..............

and leave this section for the rest to have an informative and constructive discussion.

Thanks.

Open forum, freedom of speech.. Thats all it is about. Welcome all contribution, good bad. But one thing good here is dat, the acknowlegment dat each second we r on the face of earth, we take away valuable resources.

But another good way of reacting to that fact is, to reduce and reuse.  :) Or last thing.. Recycle ourself.. 6ft undersgrd.. Good fertilizer, after taking so much.. go give back to mother earth la..   :D

Nanda...is it possible if you educate us on Turtle Conservation on different thread as I am interested to know more about it.

I would like to know how did some local's manage to have licence to sell turtle eggs.

Enviroment is a very interesting subject & very general, I think it has been around for quite long period of time in Malaysia but all just ended up going down the drain or not getting proper support from divers themself.

Is like knowing what we did are wrong & not helping, but we continue doing it coz is convenient...is an easy way out or the flame has died as we dont want to do anything about it except harping on it....I am guilty of it too.

We talk about the cycle .... up's & down's, only so few would actually be doing it, mentality maybe.

All the project's...free dives....free etc....& we keep on doing the same over & over again even though we got the same results.

For sure some be hiding behind the conservation & saving the enviroment effort's with interest of getting the money more then anything else...dont forget to make name's & be famous.

Some even fight with eachother just to get the bigger cakes & not willing to work with eachother.... :laughing11:

My personal bits to enviroment.....telling divers about THE above.

 :D

Hi snafu!! great to see your interest here.

http://www.umt.edu.my/turtle/2007Report.pdf

This is the report which is a good read and you can then access their site too.

As we know, and as I've told my wife.....to succeed in conservation in Malaysia, you have to work with locals. (the locals must have some "power" too!!)

the company she works for "Way Out Experiences (W-O-X)" is working together with the University. (You can see how they do thing as their report attached.)

They are starting small in fear of going too big and fizzling out.

I'm supporting them by getting my dive buddies and Oil & Gas buddies/company involved.

The university is planning to make a presentation to MISC Berhad for larger funding and I'm trying to get them to become part of the Eastern Corridor Development Plan by PETRONAS.

Shafi: can you tell me a little more about who you work for and what you do? Would be interesting if we can work together.  :)

Nanda...itikuek, myself, Spazm, Trigger, DeepBlu, AccordBuruk, Orinato Furi, putradiver are among the people currently involved in conservation projects with UMT...but not on the sea turtles side.

We just don't like to talk about it.  The same people have also been doing the same in Tioman; and later this year will be undertaking a conservation project commissioned by the government. So I'm not going to list further cos I hate to talk,. I just do.

Correct. but on a different note. before we give back to mother earth, become an organ donor. let human kind enjoy the second hand stuff before it returns to the earth.
