She is a pretty European guest in Redang and I was a student back then. The only thing I remember most about her is the tattoo of a seahorse at the edge of her left rib cage. I was assigned to take her and other guests to a snorkelling trip at Teluk Rotan, a famous snorkelling spot at that time. While we were enjoying our snorkelling trip (as always!), one of the boatman found a dead giant clam in the water. He was delighted and immediately skin dived to pick it up, and was struggling (because it was heavy) while carrying it to the boat.
The European lady quickly swam towards the boatman and ask him to leave the carcass of the giant clam behind. Feeling embarassed, the boatman dropped the clam back to the sea with everyone staring at him with relief. Thank god the lady was there to stop him.
When I was in Redang for 7 weeks along with my coursemates to complete training under recreation department, we have witnessed many irresponsible attidude and actions shown by both local and foreign visitors. We might not be able to change the whole world to respect all the marine life (dead or alive) but, we can start doing little things just like what the European lady had done. Remember, little things do count!
Cheers to more cleaner and unpolluted beaches and islands!!
