From the U/W pictures published by WDC, it's a 2 inches nylon net with small buoys on upper line....it looks like what local  commercial fishermen called Pukat Malas which  they deployed by sunset near the reef. It's actually targeting pelagics eg. trevally & sometimes yellow tail fussiliers during March-April & Sep.-Oct period where the fussiliers are much bigger.

Pukat Malas is a lazy way to catch fish where they'll leave it till early morning & haul it up before sunrise....an ideal time without being noticed by anyone.

Judging from the images my guess they did a mistake due to careless or misjudge or complication from bad weather..... and created a shitty mess....we'll they might have lost RM 3-5K for the net....but the reef lost more than that though.

2 years ago a small fishing boat "A" licence was doing this method at our dive site in P.Kerengga ( Redang ) around 6.30pm. Called the Marine Park. 20 mins later a patrol boat arrived & manage to locate & pull the net up....Up till today the owner didnt claim it. I was told that the authorities burnt it!
Sometimes we can't blame the Marine Park Dept. for not taking any action.....fishermen are mobile & you can't have the Marine Park boats
everywhere especially spots like Tokong Laut!  ;)

My 2 cents Brickfields opinion.....  :D

PS. well i guess ya'll never seen damages done by the famous " Pukat Tunda" fishing vessel.....& it's still legal!

Not to stray to far from the issue, the enforcement officers are government staff who are paid rather low and have an even lower level of education. (most of the time anyway.)

I agree that we divers should agree to pay more as marine park fee or any other cost that will DIRECTLY help.

Maybe part of the marine park fee goes to local fishermen? Wages of marine park staff? Additional marine park patrol?

I still feel the media is the best avenue to highlight the matter. any of these photos sent to the Sun Daily???

Do you mean when they are poor, they can do anything they want? Or, less educated can do what ever they like?

Actually wrote a long respond, deleted it and decided airing views and arguing here is no point. As a diver feels sad that this incident happened but nearly 30 mil Malaysian and how many thousand divers? The authorities will not care. Other issues will be given priorities over this.

There are always two sides to every argument and the marine life and corals arguments have never been heard? Maybe we should eat less fish.......hehehehe

All i'm saying is that, just like paying off the cops in KL when we're caught speeding, etc. I guess these boats also "pay off" the officials in some form or another.

Corruption usually ends when people don't need the cash (i.e. better wages) or understand the outcome of their actions. (i.e. better education.)

You should post your reply, Ketam.. Long or short, sad or otherwise ... Airing views and having healthy debates enriches discussions, which is one of the main objectives of this forum... Les not use the lackadaisical attitude of certain parties as an excuse for inaction on our part.

You never know - one of your posts here with a few days of ra-ra and hoo-haa  will come to a lot of good.

In some cases, it sure saved Sugar Wreck (for now at least  ;) ).

Thanks Shafi,
The sugar wreck fiasco really picked Ketam up. Gave hope to a hopeless situation.
