Scuba Dynamics is sponsoring pencils? Cool. Then we will need super pencils - non-breakable, glow in the dark and has an alarm or beeping sounds when we 'lost' 'em. Evelyn, yes, Belle did use the pencil and it looks very convenient. And MasAduka, we’ll be glad if you want to sponsor as well.

Back to the SIP. For this trip, there were 5 of us as stated above, plus our Reef Check trainer, Daniel. Lady boss Shafi couldn't join us this time around because she was busy running around the oil palm trees at Tawau :).

On Thursday nite, picked up Bijan, Belle & Evelyn @ 9.30pm and drove to Kuantan, where we met up with Jgshuwei at around 12.00am. Belle & Evelyn transfered to his car and off we went to Kuala Terengganu where we're supposed to pick up our trainer, Daniel at the KT bus station. Emm, all of us were not sure where the station is, but confidently, Jgshuwei led the way... well, it took us about 20 mins to reach the station.

(Ermm, can't find a good looking map)

Finally we reached the station and picked up Daniel at 4.00 am.

We drove straight to Merang Jetty. It was 4.30am, still too early and decided to sleep in the car, and we did.

We were woken up by the noises of the buses @ 6.30am,parked the cars and went for breakfast.

We left for Redang Kalong @ 8.00am.

Taking a nap ….

Jgshuwei's napping style.

Bijan.

Bijan & Miezegreat

Cool Daniel enjoying the sea breeze.

These girls slept all the way from KL to Redang.

to be continued...

Jgshuwei, don't worry, I have plenty more, hehe... ;).

Bijan,  thank you :).

continue....

We reached the jetty at 8.30am.

AB & Tim of Kalong greeted us, had our breakfast - again, and we were given the keys to our rooms. A comfortable looking room and I was really glad to see a clean bathroom. Ah, I already like this place.

We rested for a bit before we start with our 1st survey. The weather was looking good and we were hoping that the water is too.

And off we go…

Happy Faces before we went into the waters.

Day 1 ~ Survey #1 - Dive site: Paku Kecil

Time in: 11:39 am
Bottom time: 71 minutes
Max depth: 13.1 meters
Avg depth: 10.9 meters
Visibility: 5 meters
Water temperature: 27 Celsius

A bit disappointed when we got in, the visibility was not that good. Daniel and myself went to lay the transect line and on the way back to the starting point, I spotted a green turtle sitting quietly watching us swim past by.

Daniel laying the line.

Who did what?

Fish survey: Jgshuwei & Belle
Invert survey: Bijan & Evelyn
Substrates survey: Miezegreat
Impacts: Daniel

There were not a lot of fishes to count - a few butterfly fishes, parrotfishes and a napoleon wrasse (lucky Jgshuwei!). Inverts on the other hand counted only 2 giant clams and substrates, 50% along the line were hard corals. Impacts are mostly coral damage caused by storm. Other than the green turtle, a blacktip shark was spotted swimming around.

Muppet moments: Err, I dropped my pencil while helping out Daniel reeling up the line. First casualty of the 2B pencil. And oh, we found out later that Jgshuwei's pencil was half broken - "I was trying to defend myself from this triggerfish and accidentally grazed the pencil on a rock. That's how it's broken lor". There goes the 2nd one.

We had a break before the 2nd survey.

These girls can really sleep, anywhere.

Survey #2 - Dive site: S.P Pulau Lima

Time in: 15:17 pm
Bottom time: 57 minutes
Max depth: 14.9 meters
Avg depth: 9.7 meters
Visibility: 3-5 meters
Water temperature: 26-29 Celcius

After 10 minutes in the water, we had to abort the survey due to poor visibility. We did a fun dive instead - well, we had to go thru a few changes of termoclines - freezing cold and warm ones. Fishes were not much, a lot of corals were damaged by storm, maybe. Saw a red anemone out of nowhere, a huge garoupa swimming back to it's hideout, a couple of nudis and a big triggerfish. By the end of the dive, the water was really blue and clear.

Some of the underwater pics.

Red anemone.

Blue waters.

This lil' samseng was trying to 'attack' me when I was taking it's pictures.  :P

Evelyn

Daniel

Bijan

Muppet moments: I didn't realise I dropped my slate  :P, but Evelyn rescued me - thanks so much, dear.  :-*
And, we all followed this someone and ascended at the other side of the island, out of sight and away from the boat. Erm, no names mentioned, but you can always refer to the KT map. ;)

After the 2nd survey, we were all tired and hungry. Had our dinner and we were lucky to watch the full moon rise between the small islands, it was a beautiful sight.

Waiting for dinner.

Full moon.

Went to bed early and hoping that the waters will be better the next day. Once my head hit the pillows, I 'pengsan-ed' till next morning.

will continue later zzzzzzz...

Day 2

Woke up at 7.00 am, feeling fresh & ready for the next survey. Had breakfast and we were briefed on the dive site. On the boat, the 3rd casualty of the 2B pencil – the lead penetrated thru the pencil and went missing and Jgshuwei got a new one.

Survey #3 – Dive site: Black Coral Garden

Time in: 08:46 am
Bottom time: 48 minutes
Max depth: 14.9 meters
Avg depth: 9.4 meters
Visibility: 10-15 meters
Water temperature: 28 Celcius

The water was clear when we got in, aah, at last, we can have a good survey – and so we thought. We noticed that Daniel did not move after he laid the line about 5 meters away and then Jgshuwei ‘flew’ fast towards us a couple of minutes later - those were the sure signs that we have to abort the survey. The current was too strong for us.

Dem! What a waste. We ended up doing fun dive with Tim’s group, having to take cover behind the rocks from the current for 10 minutes. A big garoupa gave Jgshuwei a surprise, suddenly appearing behind the rock and a group of snappers were swimming against the current.

Looking at the site, a lot of corals were damaged, mainly by storm and we guessed by the ‘coral steppers’ too. We saw a group of divers trying to balance themselves but ended up stepping on the corals instead. “I feel like inflating their BCs!”:angry4: Daniel wrote on his slate.

Other sightings – a big moray eel under a table coral, a big pufferfish, a dogface puffer, a couple of nudis, a benny fish and the infamous Mr. Trigger.

Survey # 4 – Dive site: Kerengga (Back)

Time in: 12:03 pm
Bottom time: 68 minutes
Max depth: 7.6 meters
Avg depth: 6.0 meters
Visibility: 10-15 meters
Water temperature: 29 Celcius

Clear waters and we managed to do a complete survey, yaay!

Fish survey: Miezegreat & Bijan
Inverts survey: Belle & Evelyn
Substrates: Jgshuwei
Impacts: Daniel

On the way while doing the fish survey, Bijan and I noticed a lot of giant clams. Ohh, the inverts guys are going to enjoy counting ‘em :). Results – a few butterfly fishes and parrotfishes, a lot of giant clams and 60% hard coral. Impacts are mostly coral damage by storm and we noticed a lot of drupella snails around.

The big stuff:  A white tip shark sleeping under a table coral.

Muppet moments: Jgshuwei dropped his torchlight at the starting point and realized he dropped his slate after we’ve ascended. Luckily he found it, 5 meters away from the boat. Aiiyah, John!

Belle, Evelyn & Jgshuwei doing the surveys.

White tip shark.

Rubbish.

Bijan reeling back the transect line and was happy that he successfully did it without any tangles ;)

Evidence.

When Jgshuwei dropped his slate... ;)

Burp!!

Yes, we had our lunch and short rest, and ready to rock and roll in the waters. Evelyn did not join us for this one because she was not feeling well, high fever to be exact. Poor girl! And Jgshuwei dropped his pencil, fell in between the gap of the DC's wooden floor and couldn't retrieve it. Another pencil for John :P.

Survey # 5 – Dive site – Kerengga (front)

Time in: 15:30 pm
Bottom time: 63 minutes
Max depth: 10.9 meters
Avg depth: 9.1 meters
Visibility: 5 meters
Water temperature: 27 Celcius

Fish survey: Belle & Jgshuwei
Inverts survey: Miezegreat & Daniel
Substrates survey: Bijan

The viz wasn’t good when Daniel & Bijan laid the line. After 15 minutes, Belle & Jgshuwei went off to do the fish survey and I was left alone. A couple of minutes later, the water became murkier and I was getting worried whether the fish guys were able to do their survey. Alone and scared, I was already imagining things – praying that nothing was creeping behind my back. After 5 minutes that felt like hours, I was relieved to see Bijan & Daniel.

Results for this site – Not much fishes around, just a couple of parrotfishes. A few giant clams, diadema urchins & collectors urchins, and 35% Hard coral, 40% Rock, 18% NIA and 5% Rubble. After the 100 meters, the area looks like a dessert.

While reeling back the line, I saw the group hanging around a few meters from the starting point, looking excited over something. On the right, Jgshuwei was pointing at something between a coral and on the left, Bijan was pointing at something behind a rock. Whoa! A huge nurse shark about 6-7 meters on the right (I had to look at it a few times, because the head itself is huge) and Whoa! A huge stingray about 5-6 meters on the left. The biggest that we’ve ever seen so far and we’re glad that we did. Those were the highlights of the trip we must say and we didn't stop talking about it for the rest of the day. :)

Huge sting ray lying quietly on the sandy floor. I don’t have a pic of the nurse shark but Jgshuwei does.

Muppet moments: Bijan forgot about the plumb line :P and, Jgshuwei - because he was soo excited to see the shark and stingray, he didn’t notice he dropped his slate again. Belle came to his rescue. John! :)

Survey #6 – Dive site: House Reef

Time in: 17:45 pm
Bottom time: 22 minutes
Max depth: 6.7 meters
Avg depth: 3.9 meters
Visibility: 10 meters
Water temperature: 30 Celcius

Algae everywhere! After 10 minutes of swimming and looking around, we decided to abort the survey because it was no point doing it. 80% of the corals are grown with algae and there were not much hard corals around. Belle did a good thing by picking up an empty cola can. Other than that, there wasn’t much to see.

Since the next day we had to check out early, this was the last dive of the trip.

Jgshuwei, full of energy still, went for a nite dive while we went back to our rooms and cleaned up.

Cheh! :P

All clean and hungry, we went for dinner. Sphagetti, BBQ chicken, mutton, fish, yummy! AB joined us and explained about the life cycle of the corals. Learned a lot from the 'lecture' that he gave. Jgshuwei joined us later and we waited for the full moon to rise again. But we had to give it a miss – it rained cats and dogs suddenly and we all went to our comfortable beds and sleep.

Zzzzzz……..

Day 3

Everyone woke up early to catch the 8.30 am boat. Went for breakfast and had a farewell photography session.

Can't miss this one, eh. ;)

SIP #5 - Redang Kalong Group
The guys (l-r): Bijan, Jgshuwei & Daniel
The gals (l-r): Evelyn, Belle & Miezegreat

All in all, out of the 6 dives – we did 3 successful surveys. Thank you, Daniel for guiding us for this trip. And also to Jgshuwei, Belle, Evelyn and Bijan. This was a fun trip.
Hopefully the next group who will be coming to Redang Kalong again (which includes myself and Bijan) on 27th June for SIP #6 will get to do more. Eh, next SIP ask for a leisure dive lar - we wanna go to HOLY SAND! Hehe, ;)

Thank you, AB & Tim of Redang Kalong. We will be back!
   :hello:

I'm trying to hog hock a trip to take some pics of you guys at the next SIP..although it means sleeping at the Hotel of 1000 Stars (Gipsy Divers lounge), with a huge prospect of midnight rain, eating Maggi all the way...
