Come to think of it, you are spot on - we didn't have enough pencils with us. The funky rolly thick Japanese ones we got from Kinokuniya were left behind by a Muppet.

So yes please - pencils (and a small blade or dive knife cos them sharpeners don't work on wet pencils)  :D :D

It's unfortunate we didn't take any photos of the two bikini freedivers at Batu Nesan. They were indeed very 'cooperative'...

But Mr. Tripod Rocket has them on video!

Use the el-cheapo ones from Popular Bookstore, the ones that you stuff a new nib into the back when the existing one blunts or breaks. Been using these for years (tied to my slates with a rubber band) and they have proven to be an excellent choice plus cheap too  :D

Shafi, thank you. This is the 1st SIP trip after the certification for me and Scuba Bunny. Hopefully not much mistake was made. We’re looking forward to the next SIP trip. Glad to be part of the reef conservation team.

Sime Darby Plantations, Watercolours (Peter & Anke), Video Guys (Rocket, Ipin, Ted & Helmy) and last but not least Fellow Eco Divers, thanks a lot for everything.

Thanks to all the Eco-Divers: Deepblu, jgshuwei, Watercow, Scuba Bunny, Carmen, Belle, Evelyn, Cheah & Lee - it was a pleasure diving with you all!

Some pictures that I managed to take during this trip:

Everyone were exhausted from the long ride from KL - Shafi, RoCKET & Ariffin

Deepbulu napping.

Shafi had a shoulder to drool on. ;)

I guess this cute lil' boy was as tired as us.

And Ariffin's fascination with mops!

Day 2 - Behind the scenes...

The 'Video Guys'/'We Have Names' team - Helmy, Ted, RoCKET & Ariffin.

Getting ready for the interviews.

Lee being interviewed.

Cheah's turn - he can barely open his eyes.

The faded sunset.

Dinner time - Hungry Eco Divers waiting for food.

Were all kinda 'kelam kabut' on the last day, so no pictures were taken. So, that's all folks!

OMG - Ipin was actually sleeping with his neck like that or was he admiring his rasta mop flapping in the wind?  :D

Shafi had a shoulder to drool on. ;)

Oh yes - sorry Abang Rocket... your sweater was indeed a perfect drool absorber. Think I did manage a map of Malaysia (Peninsular only)...  :icon_tongue:

Thanks for the nice behind-the-scene photos!, Mieze!! The Video Guys / We Have Names are often the forgotten, but important, ones. And now we have a photo of Mr Ted aka Sexy Belly there    :)

Okay, I am off to see more palm trees this morning. See some of you later tonight - Otherwise look out for SIP #2 report!!

My turn to report (as promised) Me just got back fm KK and really flat out after a marathon of visiting Msia in 4days! Sorry if a little merapu (non-sense)...  :D

Dive 1A: Seabell (Mock survey aka fun dive..  ;) )

After a long and tiring 7 hrs drive.. We all braced ourselves to do the mock survey. 2 teams will be going out. The so called 'lucky team' consist off - ScubaBunny, Carmen, Belle, Eve & Leader = Peter. Our dive objective : Dive, revise, look for old marker (for transact) and have fun!

We did.. The site was great! Last time I was there (Aug 2007) the vis was really bad, was hoping for better luck this time, and true enuf, we were the lucky bunch! Even before we hit the water we knew its gonna be a good dive. We can see the bottom.. Yey!

We were greeted by Snappers.. A pleasant hi from them and we went on 'revising' which is hard coral.. and which is softies.. But.. Its nothing but Hard Corals all the way.. M thinking.. "Oooh.. those substrate ppl going to have a field day of recording HC, HC, HC.. all the way.."   :D

Date: 30 May 08
Time in: 1145hrs
Time out: 1245hrs
Max: 10.4 m
Ave: 6 - 7 m
Water temp: 29 degrees
Vis : 10 - 12 m

After frolicking... There suddenly... A cute Hawksbill turtle swam pass us.. It was quite close to us.. Again.. like giving a hi-five to us ECO divers..! Yeeehaaa.. I was patrolling the bunch of staghorn when suddely I noticed Peter ws pointing his fingers to something.. and I was stunned.. I really tot it was a titan.. Scrambling for my dear fingers or thighs.. I quickly swam away.. only to noticed afterwards.. it was a scrawled file fish.. Cis! Tipah tertipuzz.....   :$  :$ Saw some good sized grouppers (above 40 cm) and some tiger cowries.

Awesome dive site, with loads of staghorns.. Healty coral growth and fish varieties.  :glasses9:

After a quickie.. (lunch aaaaa...), a little SI and a little nap.. (for some..  :D ) we all were like zombies.. whiped to go do surveys..  :P A short briefing on what and who to do stuff.. And... Me logged my 60th dive ere..  :D Cool!

Dive 2A: D'lagoon (1st Survey! Yeey..)

Presenting the members:
Team Leader: Peter
Fishies : ScubaBunny + Carmen
Inverts : Evil Keneevel (Evelyn) + Belly (Belle)
Subs : WaterMooo / Cow

Peter & watercow went in 1st in hope of recovering the old marker for the transact. Peter managed to find it in a jippy, but still went to put in a new marker as the old one is rusty and also was lying on its back.. No wonder the other search team did not managed to find it..  [-(

While waiting for the hunky guys to put dwn the line.. we all monkeyed around... looking at creaves in hopes of finding d banded shrimp..  :D fat chance that would happen but I did manage to find a bubble coral and saw either shrimp or crab. Before I can inspect further my attention was diverted to the cutee... green turtle.. that was swimming to say hi (wats with the turtle today..)  :P Happy and content.. we waited in line for the 15 mins..

A group of snappers.. came to sight.. and i was praying.. oh.. oh.. go swim @ carmen's side..  :D hehehe.. and it did.. Started the fish survey with a group of snappers and end it with snappers aswell. I think there was like close to 200 snappers on this line.. Excellent! Saw lots of butterfly fish and a pair of racoon b.fish.  :angel8:

The invert ladies was trailing us.. They had a field day of calculating giant clams! Belle mentioned they even come as small as 2cm!  :laughing11: not counting urchins but clams! Was a little worried that some1 may need some seasick meds, due to the nature of the survey.. being inverted most of the time.. the ladies did very well..  :hello:

Subs team; watercow had some help fm Peter, he did some subs survey the other end of line to save time. Mentioned that the site was healty but with some algae growth @ some areas... Its all gud for this site!

Date: 30 May 08
Time in: 1600hrs
Time out: 1723hrs
BT : 1H 23 Mins
Max: 8.4 m
Ave: 6 m
Water temp: 29 degrees
Vis : 8 - 10m

Peter asked us if we did see any trash at the site.. I said.. not something substaintial.. He said.. didnt you see the big tyres that I wrap the transact with?  :laughing11: We all did some giggles at the side.. We tot that was the MARKER..  :D

TBC - me need to zzzzzzz...  :)

Dive 4A : Lighthouse (Peter)

Opposite of Batu Nesan's atmosphere.. It was buzy buzy with Light house.. We saw the 'buzy' scene from a far and can spot that snorkelers / boat man are feeding the sergent majors with 'food'. We were a little dishearten (some of them appreared to be 'standing') but still carried on. Not long after that we were happy to have those snorkelers leave the site  :hello:. After doing the emergency invert / impact survey @ Seabell (deeper end, another ECO Muppet forgot to do impacts!  :P ), Watercow was alittle low on air, so me had to help out Peter lay the lines for Lighthouse.

The condition of Lighthouse was really worrying.. Algae was very evident and urchins everywHere!!! Me and watercow did inverts and i tell you.. this site has easily 300 - 400 urchins around the transact.. Sheesh..   :crybaby2:  :crybaby2:  :crybaby2:  :crybaby2:

However, Peter being the grandpa of EcoDivers, cant help but giving the snokelers (new batch of snorkelers came in), a peekaboo and told them.. NOT TO STEP ON CORALS! :) Even watercow nearly had a mishap of knocking his head d boat..  :(

Subs peeps also note there is lots of rock.. and NIA.. Shows this site really needs help / attention..  :crybaby2: Pls help..

Date: May 31st
Time in: 1500hrs
Time out: 1555hrs (55 mins in 29 degrees water)
Max: 8.4m
Ave: 6m

Fishies : Deepy & Lee
Invert : Watercow & Scubabunny
Subs : Mieze + Peter

Dive 4A : Batu Nesan (Peter)

I love this site! Its the best site among the rest! YEY!  :smileinbox:

Before we go in.. we were greeted by cute squids near d surface.. Best! Then, after that... We were greeted by hundreds of Juvi Chevron Baracuddas!!! Wicked!  :angel8:  :angel8: It was just swimming in a group near the coral edge.. It was really amazing.. Then come the bat fish.. A loner, swam like just 2 ft away from me, checking out our bubblesss... It was erm abt 1ft in length. Kewl!  B-)

I didnt see any sharks (i was lookin down most of the time coz me did subs) but some say its quite fat and abt 4-5 ft. Overall.. I didnt forget to bring my plumline but my plumline gave up on me after the 44th mtr.  :$

Finally managed to digitize some of the video. Here is the snippet, footage shot by Rocket

enjoy....

Nice one, bro. I am sure Rocket's ahems shrunk significantly when it went under him. Apparently his buoyancy was perfect at that very moment.

...hey am i too late to jump in here and say that we should all be thanking you guys for doing such a great job!!! It was a lot of fun too of course, but who said work can't be fun :)

I've added a little bit about you on our blog , although there aren't any pictures yet.  Maybe you can help me out there (my email here)?  I had a great time helping out at Sea Bell, De Lagooon, Lighthouse and Batu Layar.  The photo-shoot was also really funny.  Oh yeh they know how to make us look good heh heh.  What is really great to know is that the surveys revealled that we have some good condition reefs here on the Perhentian Islands. Not only are these reefs vital for us to go diving, but they are also worth a fortune to the tourism industry and fisheries.  With continual monitoring we can spot changes in coral health and highlight need for change! Although the future of coral reefs can seem rather bleak given the evidence we should be heartened there are so many individuals and organisations jumping in to highlight the need for conservation.  It is quite obvious to me that we can make a difference.  Thanks a million everyone.

Looking forward to seeing the next Eco-Divers at Watercolours on thursday to survey some more reefs!  See you soon :)
