Save the corals
« on: September 21, 2006, 12:54:47 PM »

a friendly reminder to me and all of the divers...

let us be reminded that the coral of the islands along our peninsula is under threat. so i would remind to those who are interested in getting scuba diving license and to those who already have one to be extra carefull when u go diving. please do not smash the corals with your fins. most coral takes about 1 year just to grow a few cm. i've seen lotsa catasthrophic underwater sites caused by irresponsible divers. fin blade's cutting mark on the goniopora sp (brain coral) and acropora sp and porites sp and the other species. it is sad to see how all this lovely corals destroyed in such time while it take them years to grow. with all other bleaching contributors (such suntan lotion, fish feeding and others), the corals are dying each day.

each year, there will be volunteering efforts to clean up the beaches and also the COT and sea urchins. but these efforts is just a part of what we can contribute in conserving the corals. lets it start with us as an individual and then work together as a community.

save the corals...

ade member yg bijak pandai dalam marin sains tak bersetuju kutip COT. Pada dia, ade sebab menyebab COT tu diperlukan. Yg baik katanya, galakkan pembiakan Triton Shell which is the natural predator of COT......

hmm.. u r right, by natural law, u shudnt disturb the circle of life. the ecosystem. but then the abundance of COT and sea urchins has made the necessary action to be taken. its not that we want to terminate the entire population, we just want to reduce the population. COT and sea urchins generally breed easily and have no problem with feeding since the food abundance (dead coral bersepah kat malaysia). but then the living coral is wat we are protecting. and then, some coral start their new life on dead coral, so we are trying to preserve these juveniles from being scavenge by those COT and sea urchins.  mencegah lebih baik dari mengubat. hehehe.. and how can we said we care about Triton Shell breeding, when most divers collect them as souvineer (well, i myself back then did this kinda thing too.) sorry... hehehe...

Yeah.. i agree with SeaDemon :P on "What you take from the sea, you give back to the sea some..."
for example:
You are on the live-aboard. You take say, a giantclam or a fish (as a figure of speech). You ate them. A few hours later, you pass motion back to the sea... so, "what you take from the sea, you give back to the sea 'some' "

Unlike the corals, you kick it, then kena tunggu some time for it to grow. What a shame. But then again, i have seen a few divers done that, including yours truly here during early open water diving. But that was many years ago, i guess those corals that i kicked have certainly grown to some extent. ;-)

That's true to some extent, because studies on coral predation are pretty recent and nobody knows how many COTs are out there and how they have affected corals (in a long-term scale). Furthermore, by grazing on hard, fast growing corals, they enable other species to grow and relieve them of competition.  However, it is suggested that nutrient pollution that comes from land has contributed to the survival of the COT larvae, causing outbreaks of COTs in a few places. Global warming too, is suggested to be the culprit. But let me remind you that these studies are pretty recent too. Only a few coral reefs in the whole world are monitored rigorously, like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.

I am an advocate of reintroducing the King Tritons onto our reefs..and also hte Harlequin Shrimps..those are the natural predators of the COTs.

actually, i noticed snorkellers these days dah tak pakai fins (on my last trip to redang last month)

wa tanya "is there a reason for this?"

and i was told "its to prevent them from destroying the corals."

but i think otherwise, sbb kalau tak terror berenang, memang gerenti they all will stand on corals to rest.

what u all think?

I find the ruling stupid. Snorklers use personal flotation device (lifejackets) when they snorkle. Maybe tey should extend the ban to divers as well as many divers (myself included) will once in a while whack some coral with my fins blade.

Most operators take snorklers out to where the corals are nicer, and they are hardly areas where you can actually stand at. Think if the surface current is strong.

agree, including those who yang dah terer berenang, for sure they all taknak pakai life jacket, then bila penat main diri je atas coral. memang resort operator tak bagi fins kat guests, sebab save budget sikit. bukan sebab nak save corals. kalau nak save corals, kenapa kena bagi guest diaorang berguni guni roti untuk bagi makan kat ikan tu. kenapa tak nasihatkan guest diaorang jgn pakai sun tan or sun block lotion sebelum gi snorkling. dan ada sebilangan guest, diaorang lagi suka tengok coral porites yang besar besar gedabak dan area coral yang dah mati instead tengok staghorn and other species punya coral. pelik jugak. apa apa pun if we can start it just by ouself first, itu pun dah cukup bagus kan.. tapi cam biasalah, kita hanya manusia.. kekadang tu kita pun buat silap. termasuk la hamba.

Saving the Corals ... very good but as long as there are divers or water sports, is tough.

Lets not blame the new divers or students, why do instructors take new divers to coral areas?

Cant 100% save the corals without stopping diving... but can always do it with minimum impact, starting with the educators.

Start with yourself ... by not being afraid to let others knows what they are doing is wrong even towards friends & family members.

Minimum Impact, is the way to go.

Agree wif u there, bro.

buat penat aje practice the show-the-middle-finger-and-splash-water-and-show-middle-finger-again technique bobo suggested.

 ;D ;D

i suppose, family n frens wud be more willing to hear u out.

strangers or other divers in the group, on the other hand, may not. esp more so if u are not a DM or Instructor.

Actually Parrotfish, Nudibranch, Crown of Thorns and Hawksbill Turtles. Everyday they chew and crunch corals.
