IMO..if you can include some reference(Facts) in your letter to support the campaign would be good.

Dear Everyone...

My honest opinion is that if the more people watch SHARWATER.....very very very high chance they may hate sharkfin the rest of their life. I put myself when watching the movie as one of a non diver who loves shark fin soup.....the way how Rob Steward present the movie makes one to be ashame, angry & emotional about the killings of sharks that is going on now. Zaide & Jay, you guys feel it too rite?

SeaDemon: I think by watching this movie makes it a better way than listening to a marine biologist because throughout the movie, lots of education element with stats & actual reality scenario was presented. Very intresting way of educating the public, from a kid to the older ones. No wonder SHARKWATER won 22 International Awards.

Nanda: I have ask...at the moment no distributor for this movie in Malaysia yet. So maybe it will not be played in Malaysia. I'm trying to work something here with Rob Steward representative. Keep u guys posted. Or else I get the Balakong people to do the pirated dvd. :D

Just burn those restaurants down. And the seafood distributors also.

Sound great but not cool...

Nomatter how passionate or upset you may be (even for a good reason) saying something that involves racism, degradation, offensiveness and bordering rudeness will neither help us convey a positive message to the readers nor achieve our goal to bring awareness that will eventually spur right choices.

A constructive and positive message will always trump a negative one.
Just my 2 cents...

No hard feeling, we are on the same side Bro...

hi everyone

despite our awareness of not eating shark fin soup, i must say that the level of awareness in the general malaysian public is lacking. this can be clearly seen when most top chinese restaurant in malaysia still serves shark fin soup which means the public especially the rich & educated  (since they probably can afford to eat there) have no problem eating shark fin soup. my plan is to make this habit a taboo in malaysia and the restaurants that serves them be boycotted until they remove shark fin soup from the menu.

when i started some research i was surprised to find out that all chinese restaurants in top hotels in KL serves shark's fin soup. so perhaps we can target our campaign there because the hotels are visited by foreign tourist that has higher awareness in shark conservation issues.

here's a list of 10 chinese restaurants in KL hotels that serves shark's fin soup

No   Name
1   Lai Poo Heen, Mandarin Oriental
2   Shang Palace, Shangri-La KL
3   Golden Phoenix, Hotel Equatorial
4   Toh Lee Chinese Restaurant, Nikko Hotel
5   Dynasty Chinese Restaurant, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel
6   Li Yen, The Ritz Carlton
7   Shanghai Restaurant, JW Marriott Hotel
8   The Museum, The Legend Hotel
9   Spring Garden, The Crown Princess Hotel
10   Si Chuan Dou Hua, Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur

My proposed plan is first for MUW to send an official request letter to the hotel management to remove shark's fin soup from the menu. This action can be publicized with a press release in other diving communities website & publication such as wetpixel.com, digideep.com, underwaterphotography.com, scubadiver australasia etc. In the press release we'll list the name & email address of the hotels and ask other divers to write a letter to the hotel (with our template) to appeal as well.

What do you guys think? Moderators, do you think its a good idea?
Any other ideas? Should we do this? (coz no one else will...)

r u sure all of them is REAL sharkfin? it may say sharkfin at the menu, the waitress may say sharkfin.. but did u do a check and ask the chef or their suppliers?

i spotted 3 restaurants there that is confirmed using substitutes. but it taste just like the real thing. others i do not know.

please do research before posting such comments as it will tarnish those restaurant's name.

as i have posted in another thread somewhere here, you can safely enjoy sharkfin soup.

here is the post i posted there.. lazy to type again so just copy and paste.

bro.. hate to burst your bubble, but most of the sharkfin soups is FAKE.

you can go ahead and continue enjoying your sharkfin soup. they are all confirmed FAKE unless they cost RM100 per bowl.
these substitutes are WAY MUCH MUCH cheaper than 'real' sharkfin as they are vegetable based.

there are the 2 popular substitutes.
1, a type of gourd (dont remember the name in english, but when translated from chinese, it is called fish fin gourd).. after letting it dry, they extract the insides of the gourd (a type of plant) and viola! when cooked, taste just like shark fin.

2, JELLY..

so, go ahead and enjoy sharkfin soup in wedding dinners and so on. there is NO sharks harmed in the soup.

BON APPETITE!!

once at a wedding dinner, there were 2 guys saying 'EWL.. sharkfin soup! how can you guys eat these things.. and so on.. to the point i was embarrassed to be in the same race as them, as they made chinese sound soooo disgusting.' i was so disgusted with them i wanted to slap them. so the remaining 8 of enjoyed the extra 'soup' portions and didnt bother telling them this is not real sharkfin soup. its called sharkfin soup because historically, it used sharkfin. sharkfin does even have TASTE!! thts y making substitutes is SOOO EASY..

same thing applies, why is ASIA JAYA LRT Station called ASIA JAYA? because there is a complex there that is called asia jaya ages ago (now ARMADA HOTEL). and was already a hotel (different name) before the LRT station was even planned.

for all those 'noble' anti-sharkfin activist, KNOW your soup, KNOW what you are saying, DO research and THINK before you go around shouting anti-this and anti-that.

in malaysia, there is almost no place selling sharkfin soup using real sharkfin. there is a few restaurants but most is not.

Hi Harold,

I understand that you Love Shark fin Soup, you have been promoting fake shark fin soup.My question to you, So when you attend a wedding banquet, would you assume the fin is fake n happily slurping it? you stated somewhere i read, you had confirm 3 restaurants is serving FAKE SFS, would you have conclusion on the fin soup you had is all fake?
you did mention that real fin soup would cost over rm 100 a bowl? are you sure on this? base on what?

Below, some pictures taken in Malaysia's wet market, as you will notice the fins are still attached n they are not expensive :

This is the fins you are consuming, low grade fins from small n baby shark...
Where does the big fins goes?
singapore, hong kong n china!!!

I really dont think the fin soup you having in wedding banquet are really fake...
I assume you are not married n will not serve sfs on your wedding banquet (Thank you), lets say if you are not aware of this n will host ur wedding banquet.
Will you consider serving FAKE shark fin to your family, relative, business partner, friends, clients, customers n respective guests? Knowing that some may notice n talk behind you? paiseh leh...
If you attend a good reception dinner in some grand hotel, they would not serve fake stuff.
(I have no longer attend wedding serving Shark Fin Soup)

I m not sure if you are aware Malaysia is the top ten Shark Fin catcher/exporter in the world contributing of 2.9%?

Harold, are you a diver? do you concern about the no. of Sharks being harvest annually? will you please stop promoting Shark Fin Soup/Fake Shark Fin Soup?

Below me interviewing a chef/owner of a restaurant serving SFS :

If you go to Ming Tien for SFS, that i can confirm FAKE...

Go ENJOY YOUR FAKE SFS...He Truly believe that if you consume fish, it is ok to consume MOLA-MOLA!!!http://www.facebook.com/SharkFinCrisis

err.. are you now saying selling and purchasing sharks at wetmarket isnt right as well?

good grief.. i hate amateur yet trying to talk big activist that don't bother to do research and relies on CNN/FACEBOOK for their information. did you know 45% of the things they show on CNN is NOT TRUE? especially when it comes to overseas news? and facebook is even worse.. samore going around shooting people at a personal level.. seriously bro.. you need to control your EQ before you get a heartattack..  :laughing11:

sigh.. do i really have to spell everything out to you? or even spoon feed you? here's some REAL facts..
how do they catch sharks? true, some goes underwater with a net and catches sharks (bamboo, nurse sharks), and i saw sharks stranded in the net (i guess the one that caught the shark dropped the net or something, which i set loose) but those are for the illegal purpose of putting them in fish tanks, not our stomach.

the sharks were caught in trawl nets dude.. trawl nets have no eyes. they just catches whatever swim past them.

SOOO.. if you want to stop sharks fin soup, stop the usage of trawl net, which kills mola-molas, whales, dolphines, turtles, sea snakes..

it is good you are energetic and have concern on the environment, but do the right thing.. put your energy into things that will actually work. they have already came out with substitute shark fin.. now we just have to stop catching sharks, which most of the time is accidental. you dont see sharks being sold DAILY at the wet market.. occasionally yes, not everyday like kembung, tilapia etc..

if you cant join the REAL activist, at least support them like what i do. i donate to green peace and signs their petitions. their causes are REAL and they really do research before they go all out. those are activist which deserves RESPECT and not others that go around making noise.

on a personal level, what does being a diver or not have to do with all this? are divers that love spear fishing not divers? are divers that catch clown fish etc.. to be put in tanks not divers? are divers that love harassing fishes underwater, touching them, scaring the shit out of them not divers?
