MRCB gets RM132m contract

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) has been awarded a contract worth RM132.2 million from the government to carry out works involving the design, building and reconstruction of beaches using the "pressure equalization module" system in Teluk Tekek, Tioman Island, Pahang.

MRCB said in an announcement on Thursday that the project, which would be completed by July 2009, aimed at overcoming the coastal erosion faced along the beaches at Teluk Tekek during the monsoon season, which has resulted in the shoreline retreating inland and threatening the stability of adjacent buildings and structures.

It also said further related works are required to stabilize the riverbanks along Sungai Tekek and Sungai Batang Sabut that have been eroded by river currents.

MRCB added that apart from providing environmental solutions for the area, the project would also provide landscaping, proper walkways and free boat mooring facilities for the villagers

This is a good project for the people in Tioman.

I am looking forward to see the outcome of it.

All these after a lot of the coral reefs off Tekek had been damaged and gone...

Now they're doing this "development" project some more...huh

If the "development" project is not carried out in an "environmentally-conscious" manner (which, IMHO, is very likely to happen), then the project will cause more long-term damage to the reef ecosystem off Tekek than good. Research by NGOs like Reef Check and Project AWARE has indicated that improper coastal development causes more wide-scale damage to the ecosystem than what divers and snorkelers can do with their fins  (ref: www.projectaware.org).

We wait and see...

The future of Tekek's reefs are uncertain. What is certain is that, MRCB will make lots of profit from this project. At what expense?

This is a good project for MRCB, IMHO.

According to Reef Check and others, one of the "services" that coral reefs provide to society is coastal protection. One estimate I have seen suggests that reefs protect up to 20% of our coasts from erosion.

In Tekek, large parts (but not all) of the reef have been degraded. Perhaps this is a contributing factor to the erosion. So dumping sand (which is a large component of the project) might be only part of the solution. Perhaps we should be advocating a more comprehensive approach, including, for example, artificial reef structures, which will create reefs into the future as well as protect the coast from erosion.

The project does have some great benefits for the local population. Part of the project involves widening and deepening the river in Tekek, creating mooring areas for the local's boats. So they can at least store them safely.

The impact of the project is being monitored at Pirate Reef, in the middle of Tekek bay, so there should hopefully be some good data on the impact of the project.

Hope that this project was really good for our environment, not the "profit sharing" project.

I always wonder what do our government mean about 'SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT' policy in their mega projects. Do we actually sustain or do we actually develop? How do we develop at the same time we need to sustain? Hmm...
