How Qualified Is Your Dive Guide?
« on: September 26, 2006, 09:36:22 PM »

There are many self-trained divers on the islands, some working at dive centers, and we often see them donning up scuba equipment and dive. Some have even participated in "salvage" works, staying at the bottom on extended times, many on deco but not knowing how to mange decompression stages. We often go to the islands on dive trips and will normally be guided by a dive guide (whom we always take for granted as either a DM or an instructor). But how do we know how qualified the dive guide is? Will he/she be able to react accordingly in times of trouble etc?

Do you check the dive center's dive guide qualifications?

yeah..agree...kasi benefit of the doubt....give face maaa.....and be careful your self.....but kalau ade bad practice going on...sound terus....jangan kasi chance....that is your prerogative(betul ke eja ni?) as a customer.

Also masa check out dive, dia check out kau...kau pun check out dia....it work both ways.....

Usually, i give them the benefit of the doubt.

If tak berapa kenal, i would then observe how they conduct briefings etc. if its not to what i expect, then i will watch out for my buddy and myself lor.

Like what bro mephisto sed : check him/her out masa buat check out dive.. (kalau DM pompuan, lagi bagus, ek? Kill two birds with one stone...kekeke)

I have also bumped into (and dived with) a few DMs who got their certification from OW to DM/SI in three months.

And the experience(s) wasnt very pleasant.

Which then begs another question : Should a DM's experience count as well? eg. how long he/she has been diving?

After all, who would your rather be diving with : A DM with 100++ dives, or a DM with 60++ (the minimum requirement to be DM certified) dives?

Having said all that, however, at the end of the day, we are responsible for own (and buddy's) safety.

Sorry MOD, kalau terbabas topic. Just my 2 sen with my muka seposen.

 :)

Very tough question to answer, i think is better to have DM or Instructor with plenty of experience in different diving conditions. DM & Instructor can have all the theories in the world but when comes to the dives, is all about experiences.
