Coral Restoration in Malaysia
« on: July 28, 2011, 08:36:46 AM »

Hello people,

I like to know more on coral restoration project in Malaysia. As per now, i've never heard of any. Maybe it is organised in small scale? Maybe some of us are involved. I invite you to share :)

Thanks bro.. Anymore suggestion? Anybody that we know currently running coral transplant, coral nursery and anything similar to that?

I know that reef check is doing something on that in pangkor?

Will members of MUW will be interested to join any coral restoration project?

Great.. I'm thinking of doing something about coral transplant. Figuring more details on it.

Since we do have members in MUW who are operating resorts and DC, will any of them would like to get involved as well? This will need not just physical effort, but other kind of support as well. It can be in term of financial, ideas, equipment and other?

Will be there be any takers who are willing to collaborate?

hi guys... new here...
i like the idea of coral restoration but i does sound easier than actually doing something about it...
the coral propagation isn't something new and its quite easy to propagate corals
u could pretty much propagate most species of corals including LPS corals
heres the problem...
For this kinda project to work you need an organization willing to pump in money and time for this kinda operation which in long term isn't going to be cheap. Finding this type of organization isn't going to be easy as not many people know what to do with corals... its not as easy as planting it back... u need to research the reef and waters to plant certain corals... even vegetables need certain climate and soil not to say corals... and than theres maintainance of the reef... its not just plant it and leave it be... without proper maintainance and care it pretty much don't stand a chance as we all know the treats which consist of fish bombing/trolling etc...
with the above said its not an easy task to accomplish.
here comes my question...
how many would actually support and do something about this kinda operation??
im very intersted in this and i hope to hear more suggestions... thx
 ;) ;) ;)

Guys,

Do check with Bubbles DC (www.bubblesdc.com) in Perhentian Island. They have set up 2 (If not more) little reefs from the corals that wash up after the monsoon. I think they called it "Pibar" or something.

They continue adding any broken coral found and the last I time I visited (August 2010), anemones and soft corals were growing on the stacks of broken dead coral and it was actually becoming a new house reef. :)

Would be great if other resorts & DCs do it too but do talk to Bubbles DC for the details. (Speak to Peisee or Ronnie)

Cheers!!

yup, PIBAR is their house reef.. lots of life and comparing the first time i dived there in 2008 and now [recently during merdeka day], the reef is growing rather healthily.. anemone, lots of giant clams (not yet giant but its getting bigger), gobe fish, 2 resident black tip reef sharks (one around 1.5meters, the other around 3~4 foot), occasionally white tip reef shark..

even saw indian walker, octopus etc on my dives there..
