Bread pieces contribute to Coral death??
« on: May 24, 2007, 06:57:42 PM »

This is a trival question :

In Marine parks around Malaysia or some parts of the world , it's a normal practice for the operators or tourist to bring along slices of bread to feed the marine life. ( no doubt some countries have banned this practice, it changes the eco-system)

What I would like to ask is does the pieces of bread not eaten by the marine life, falls onto the coral. Will it contribute to coral destruction? If it does, is there concrete studies to show proof and results to this matter?

I hope someone can enlighten me on this issue, Thank you...

mar - oct.. season for snorkellers.... go for boat snorkelling.. those beach boy take our bread to attarct and feed the fish.... yeah every1 happy.. the old, the young the boy and the chicks......

nov - feb... monsoon seasons... no ppl to feed the fish... fish die.... coral die....

y coz those fishes already dependent on those idiot boats and idiot beach boy... to feed them and they no longer have the ability to find food on their own...the common source for their food was coral... they didnt eat coral but they ate those thingy around the coral and indirectly clean up the coral. so coral fresh n clean... and survive....

bread will disolvve anyway.... this is what i think  and i more thing is .... snorkellers feed small fish... small fish coming.... predator of small fish also join... hahahahah

IMHO.... dont know u agree a not la

Not all fish eat corals! Some are herbivor, eat algae, zooplankton (Ooops, this is not plant) and phytoplankton. Like what you said, is the impact in the food chain that we are concerned. Not only during monsoon season, when anyone feed the fish with bread, all types of fish rush to get a taste of it. When one fish doesn't eat what its suppose to feed, the animal in one level down in the food chain will be abundant out of control.

Should introduce more sea urchins and stonefish in marine park areas

Last time before i learn diving, i only snorker around the marine park, i asked the people who take care of the park. Is the fishes inside the marine used to bread feeding? The answer is "Yes". What if during monsoon season? "We'll feed them because they already don't know how to look for food anymore". I was shocked with his reply, because the outcome not only jeopadize the food chain but also the eco-system.

Bread feeding is some technique which used to contact the fish in 0 distance, without the bread normally fishes will run away when you come close. So who do you think come out this stupid idea?

Well, it'd be a problem if people starts doing that to the entire reef systems (the entire island?) for a long period of time (to change the order or eating behaviour of the fish).

I see more immediate damages done by the vibrations from those wooden boat's engine/propeller when they took the boat loads of snorkelers, the oil spills from diving boats that visits the reef (especially those 2-stroke engines using 2T oils). On a bigger scope, the slight increase in temperature due to global warming and littering of the sea give a much bigger coverage of damage in much shorter time.

then when i become diver.. i realise the importance of not feeding the fish.. and to protect coral.........................
