i agree wit you Foo..
among the divers they are still be a spear gunners and lobsters catches..

I agree to it too. I think there are not many of these spear gunners (correct me if i'm wrong). And we could do something about this.
Anyway,
ARE WE PLANNING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS ISSUE.

What issue? There is no issue. The only hope is education. No point barking like dogs at a hill. It won't move.

Personally, I dont think such small scale harvesting of shark would post any problem to the overall shark population. If you really look closely, not many family would normally have shark in their daily menu.

The real concern should be the "tasty" evil shark fin soup. Question to ask ourselve, are we doing anything about it? I had refused many times to eat the shark fin soup in wedding dinner, and telling all the guest at the same table our experince as diver with this beautiful creature, and the cruel fact about shark fin fishing (not a very popular thing to do  [-(). Have you done your part? The way I see it, education is the key for conservation. like the old say " when buying stop, the killing can too".

I wonder if whale shark is really a protected spicies.... I have seens many time on newspaper, whale shark being hull up accidentally, and sell cheaply and converted to fish meal for chicken feed or fertilizer.

what a waste.

1st, educate whoever control CITES, make more sharks in the list, then we have reason to protect sharks in the water.

2nd, sharks are not tasty at all, most of them c/w ammonia scent.

3rd, sharkfins are expensive because they are hard to get back in few hundred years ago, now it became a dish to show off. Researh has shown, sharkfins contain heavy metals which can cause impotence. So do you still wanna eat sharkfin?

Yea I think its the dinners that serve sharks fin soup that's doing it. It's weird... I attended a ministry dinner a few months back and the opening speech was about 'sustainability' and 'preserving our nations biodiversity values'... It was an 8-course Chinese dinner, with of course, sharks fin soup.

I only got my company to refuse taking it.. so that was only about 30 people. The remaining 800-odd pax went ahead  :angry4:

I want to try and lobby for my company to implement a "No sharks fin" policy throughout the Group (and that is 326 companies all together, worldwide). Wish me luck, it ain't as straightforward as it seems   :$

But will try it via the Reef Check programme I have started within my Division, just to get the awareness, then can push the idea through to higher levels. See what we can do, baby steps at a time...

honesty, i have to admit I tried of shark meat few times, curry or deep fry is good, which i treated as another kind of fish. But no shark fin because, to me personally, that's a truely waste of life. Impotence????? I guess not more shark meat for me :icon_tongue: John... for the good of my willy, I better dont take my chance ...

If i recall the another study correctly, all the big fish, or should i say predictor fish, contain high level of heavy metal due to polution. therefore, to my opinion, Conservation of diversity, should not limit to protection, but most importantly, limit our polution thru recycling & reduction use of resouces. Big topic. Go and watch the movie "the inconvenient truth" or simply "the simpson movie".

Haha shafi, how ironic.... Glad you are doing your big part. All the best to you :)

No shark fin, no waste of life.
