Smoking and diving !
« on: April 27, 2007, 01:09:09 AM »

HI Members
I'm use to smoking at least 15 years before i quite 3 years ago,who cares .  What a different  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]. I agree that long-term smoking will impact my ability to dive (and live!) It's stupid, no doubt. It's bad for your lung, health and mental behaviour.
Lately we saw alots of instructor smoking while teaching the class and many divers still smoking during surface interval ??

Should the instructor surpose to show good ''ROLE MODEL'' behaviour in front the student while teaching, not to smoking around student  :(.. anyways i don't think instructor should not smoke..Rules no #1

Also smoking it's bad for enviroment !

Any thought/comment about this things guys ! ::)

Safe diving

i dove with some met sallehs here.. they said actually smoking can make them "good in air" :) ... i mean.. last longer  ::)

and also, i met one... i dove with air, and he dove with nitrox... we went to same depth, so i asked him why he choosed nitrox, and he said, after he stoped smoking, he is bad with air... need a lot of air to dive  ::)

Good topic. I have not met an instructor who is a non-smoker.
Difficult to come by these days.

I don't see the connection between bad air consumption and nitrox here  :o

erm... maybe he was trying to tell me that if he breathes air, he cannot last that long on a single bottle  ::)

hmm.. but u told me that nitrox can only prolong one bottom time at depths, right  ;) but i guess lots of ppl out there thinks that nitrox can let them dive longer :P .. yes and no :) ... at depths

nitrox allows you to prolong yr bottom time..... But your breathing rate determine the time you can spend uw irespective of nitrox or not.....

I think it would have made more sense for the guy to use 100% O2 and smoke at the same time. It'll clear up everything in his lungs.

A (cigarette) pack of 20s lasts me one/two days on dive trips.

On normal days, a pack gets thrown away after 4 days (still with 8-10 sticks left)

is there a reason for this?

If you convert of course its expensive. But people never compare the price relative to income, cost of living etc etc. To me dollar to dollar comparison will give more info than straight conversion

Hey Folk..

Smoking is killing our industry!! They think diving is unhealthy because especially new student they see the instructor keep smoking on the boat all the times.. Fo who still use this bad habit , hide from your student or just stop..simple is that. save save money ! so you can buy a CCR in future. 8-)

About the save more air then other is BS!!! Smoking doesn't help your air consumption at all !!!

No doubt the rokok price getting high,

Girl like guys not smoking it's true ?  ;D.. any ladies in tha house ??

right on bro! .. agree with you totally :)

when someone like to increase something, and start telling ppl that our rate is still the cheapest among all countries, compare to others (after conversion), but in fact, we should look at both side... the price relative to our income and cost of living :(

Yes Nizaha..im a lady amd i agree with you...
Is smoking a trend in the diving industry?
last time during my teen years...i like to have a bf that smokes...cos he looks macho...
but after a while...i dont prefer that anymore...
(after seeing my dad was in the hospital for 3 months because of smoking)
sorry again...my comment maybe sharp...
i see lady divers smoke before and after the dive...
are they being influenced by the diver bf...or its just for some status? anyway...i respect people do it for some reason...including myself...if i do it.
But anyway...men and women or even my grandma should stop smoking....

My father was a chain smoker. He had his first heart attack at the age of 35.

My brother is a chain smoker too. He is now 34 and diagnosed as having 20% damage to his main coronary artery due to smokers' disease.

My younger sister smokes and has to spend thousands for facial and hair treatments because smoking kills the skin's cells' virility.

I am a smoker ... is funny how I see people who smokes & stops, starts to become anti smoking, hardcore anti smoker to the MAX  :D  :D  :D

Many things are not good or unhealthy if you do it excessively, include eating & drinking.

I know smoking is not good but I do enjoy the smoke twirling in my mouth & blowing it out .... hmmmmmmm.

::) Lets not start with polutions ya ... hehehehehehe, car with NOT working catalytic converter ..... burning...industrial...etc.

I dive with NON smoker in here, their air consumption are sooOooOOoo MUCH WORST than me ... so I guess smoking dont make much different when comes to air consumption underwater.

Hehehe..I never smoked. Probably because those days during school I was a state swimmer..so that habit carried on until now. It is also the reason I have not gotten any (detectable) heart disease despite being overweight.

My brother's in deep shite now and my father's paying for his past sins.

It is hard to kick the bad habit but i smoke too but i smoke in moderation..... though i have tried several attempts to stop smoking completely, i still have the urge to pick up the ciggies and smoke. I dont want to try to stop anymore... so i have decided to smoke in moderation like 5 sticks a day...... but there are times when i smoke like a pack a day hahahahahah
If you have never smoke before, dont start...... it is bad for your health.... once you start it is hard to stop... that i can tell you!!!
