Is it safe for a person diagnosed with PID dive? Will carrying the tank worsen the problem? Appreciate inputs from experts out there.

How severe is the PID?

Anyway, diving is contraindicated with PID. This is because, PID symptoms may worsen or gets exacerbated with increased pressure on the disc and this is caused by bending movements (especially in carrying heavy objects).

Carrying tanks (even worse when climbing up a boat with your whole gear on) can precipitate acute pain and worse cause the disc materials to prolapse and impinge on the nerve or spinal cord.

But then, you should check with your surgeon and perhaps do an MRI to confirm the diagnosis.

I'm having this problem too..... sigh.......cannot dive for 6 months

I have something similar, though minor, but more to the neck area, cervical spondylosis. Sometimes I take the precaution to tip a helper to carry my bc+tanks onto the boat for me, don bc inwater, and reverse when done. 10 to 20 bucks going out is better than burning the whole dive trip.

But really, the doctor's advice is what you need to follow....
