Little blood coming out from nostril or throat
« on: August 09, 2010, 02:10:54 PM »

Dear divers,
I’m just wondering if it’s normal that; little blood coming out from your nostril or throat after you ascend from every dive. If yes may I know the reason why is this happening? Please advise.. I’m a beginner..thx.. :)

ok i am speaking from experience, i have had it since the first day. and still continue to get it after some dives. do not fear my friend it will go away.

the thing to do is to descend slowly...regardless of how the divemaster waves to you to move yr butt, descend slowly. equalise the moment u hit the water!! if u pinch yr nose to equalise, do not force it, descend slowly, equalise slowly.

and when u ascend, same strategy, slow, and easy. bouancy control, at the 3-6M mark and to the surface, be very conscious of yr rate of ascend and u will notice the traces getting less.

i have been told that the more u dive the harder yr lining becomes and soon it will be gone-the traces i mean.

hope that helps.

Glad to know i'm not the only one having the same prob.  :) it's kinda frustrating sometimes.. to see other divers descend smoothly.. while im bz equalising. haha

senang aja, sebelum naik bot, cuci sikit hidung dan mulut.

the thing is to dive more often, my condition cleared after many many dives. my wife still gets it. hold yr nose and blow--gently my friend.

remem slowly down and dont let anyone rush you...can see what their bubbles, let them go off first....then later you follow.

coming up slower still. remem all yr tissues will expand?

SValley you are definitely not the only one and Ketam did notice that normally this occurs to newer divers.

hi SValley,
yeap..i agree with the rest that most of the time its just because of a dry nose and throat. However, there might be certain things that you might need to have a look at if your problem persists. Things like a nasal polyp could easily bleed as well and its treatable.  :)

hehehe last trip to Tioman, two divers ascended with bleeding nose actually. Both less than 30 dives each. After sometime, with more experience it should at least be under control. Don Isse use to have nosebleed every day diving. Still remember him lying down at the ranger hut of Sipadan after a nosebleed hehehe.

Always ascend slowly and exhale fully while doing safety stops.

that's the spirit! dive until the symptom go away. but if it does not then a visit to the doc is next on the checklist. you know there are about 7 ways to equalise the pressure between your inside and out right?

i got this symptom too. I jz got my certification this weekend and noticed that my nose bleed a fair bit esp when ascending. Felt it was due to the squeeze and the equalisation when ascending..

but like what Svalley said, ascend and descend slowly, dont rush. it will be good if you have a dive com to check on ur ascend rate. very important..

like what my instructor says.. "it can be useful to attract sharks.."  :D

will try to log in more dives and see how it goes..

i was hving a chat with a Dr earlier and she told me it is the equalisation process when u ascend and descent :-) she put it in layman's term that when you equalise, you have to do it slowly and not forcefully..  ;)

decimal86: haha, that was what my instructor says. perhaps he is right. good photo opportunity too..  :D
