Hi shazay,

Mind telling your diving qualification, OWD or AOWD, and whether you have been diving beyond your limits?

shazay, the contents of this thread have plenty of advice regarding headaches..

Vomit during diving

i always get headache after a dive as well when i just started..since then, what i did was, to ascend slowly..the headaches reduced substantially after that..if its a deep dive, multi-level safety stops(<---correct ar the term) will help oso..

Hey shazay,

Perhaps you should seek medical advice.... just to be safe. But as far as i know, when my buddy had her first dive experience, she vomitted and had headaches during surface interval. Many dives later, problem cured itself. So if your problem persist, perhaps you should see doctor.....

Slowly Ascend From Every dive..longer safety stops wud help too i think..the trick is, give your body more time to offgas the nitrogen..but if the headache persists, just skip the dive..longer SI

i stand corrected..

divedoc, any inputs on this?

Shazay:

we get headaches after diving is perhaps due to lack of sleep a night before. For example, we leave for dive trip on sleepless friday nite; then we dive on saturday morning when we arrive at the island. during the dive, we probably do a lot of yo-yo dive.

all these are possible contributors to our headache after diving.

There are several reasons for getting headaches post-dive:

1) not enough sleep the night before, or consumption of alcohol (hangover)

2) holding breath when diving (CO2 retention and build-up)

3) breathing of engine fumes (sitting too close to boat's engines)

4) erratic dive profile

5) tank sits too high on BCD

6) ascending too fast

7) too much nitrogen build up

8) DCS

Biting too hard on your regulator mouthpiece for the duration of the dive may also give you a headache..........in addition to jaw fatigue.

i agreed with SeaDemon on points no 1,3 & 6... when i  for diving, i really need a gud night rest, drink a lot of water the night before ur first dive & between dives plus try not to breathe the smoke from the boat engine or fuel fume, sometime from smokers as well...  :D no effence to anybody... :D and if u dive with running nose, that also will contribute to the headache not to mention if u r a sinus patient, u will easily get headache during & after dives...

there is one time i go for diving with not enough sleep, i got headache + reverse block + bloody nose... it was so painful at that time... it last for 3 weeks(reverse block)... hardly balance myself when walking, hardly listen to people coversation, talking to people will be a diff thing to do & diff to sleep...  :crybaby2: manage to do only 3 dives during the trip... :crybaby2: :crybaby2: :crybaby2:

if i may add,

10++. shallow breathing. You are actually breathing in (again) the CO2 that you breathed out.t

also another aspect to be look at is your headache may be due to contaminated air on tank...CO (carbon monoxide) poisoning ....which can cause headache...its tasteless and it does not smell....so to detect it may be difficult..may originate from exaust fumes....usually the case..

an excerpt:

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Also called: CO poisoning
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas that has no odor or color. But it is very dangerous. It can cause sudden illness and death. CO is found in combustion fumes, such as those made by cars and trucks, lanterns, stoves, gas ranges and heating systems. CO from these fumes can build up in places that don't have a good flow of fresh air. You can be poisoned by breathing them in. The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are

Headache
Dizziness
Weakness
Nausea
Vomiting
Chest pain
Confusion
It is often hard to tell if someone has CO poisoning, because the symptoms may be like those of other illnesses. People who are sleeping or intoxicated can die from CO poisoning before they have symptoms. A CO detector can warn you if you have high levels of CO in your home.
