would be better if u take one, if you have difficulty in equalising.

My advise dont dive if u hv sinuses. If u hv sinuses take clarinase BEFORE u dive, get couple of hours rest and with nose clear only then dive. If u take clarinase just minutes before diving you'll be drowsy underwater and will affect your judgement. Play it safe bro ;)

Clarinase doesn't cause any drowsiness. So that's good. but you shouldn't take too many, one pill for the whole day (within 8 hours). you don't want a reverse block once the drug wears away.

I had sinuses, and still do sometimes.

Once it was so bad and it was during a liveaboard trip to the philipines. I forced myself to dive, and had minor nose bleeds after every dive. Don't do this!!! I could equalise exept that it took ages to equalise properly. so while others are happily diving at >30m, I was still puttering at 10m. :P bad news. when i'm finally down there they are already on their way up  :-/

when i came back i went to the specialist and turns out i had a sinus infection. I was on antibiotics for a week. it cleared and went diving again after 2 weeks. and it equalised beautifully.

as a precaution, I take 1 clarinase and a nose spray decongestant in the morning. that's it and it seem to work well for the whole day.

If you do have a confirmed sinus problem, go see a specialist. there is a steroid based nasal spray to control sinus problems. I've aso used this before.

2 hours before...if that fails, purge your octopus with the mouthpiece at your nostrils

for those have reverse block problems....there is a technique call reverse equlization....whether it works or not ...i dont know...never got reverse block....the way it works is rather than pinch your nose and blow..you suck..should dislodge any mucus in the sinus cavity.

for sinus problems....there is a technique in yoga call nasal wash....please google it....use salt water (pure not sea) to clean nasal cavity....

alternative methods you can try...

My personal advice if u r not fit, dont dive. Play it safe. As for "drowsiness" taking clarinase, it depends on a person's physiology. Some people are ok to certain types of drugs and some ppl dont. As for me Clarinase will make me drowsy, of which i shall refrain from diving. My 2 cents worth ;)

better check with the doc first what is the implication of this medication underwater... chemistry in the blood may change or react differently underwater, from whati've learnt, its best to take any pills (prior to doc's advise) 4 hrs before your dive..

Hey guys,

As for ur Q, is Clarinase good before a dive? Actually, there are several nasal decongestants out there in the market. The good ones are Clarinase, Clarityne, Telfast...
Clarinase does actually cause drowsiness after few hours, but Clarityne is the gold standard.
My advise is, if you have a congested nose and unable to equalize ur ears, do take clarinase/clarityne 2 hours before a dive and then try to equalize your ears before you dive. Another good product is a nasal spray, and there are several good ones out there; Afrin, Nasonex...Afrin works immediately before a dive as oppose to oral medications.

Rule of thumb is this, even if you have taken medications for your congestion, but you still can't equalize, DON'T DIVE!
