Difficulty Equalizing
« on: March 20, 2007, 12:02:48 AM »

Dear Mighty Dive Doc,

Recently ive got this difficulty in equalizing at shallow depth ie 14m and above, however below 20m its ok. As such i get this mild headache every time underwater. The funny thing i dont have any cold or sinus before diving. I noticed when theres enough ambient pressure its easier to equalise. Need ur advice to shed some light. Thanks :)

i used to have serious equalizing issues with my left ear and sometimes when i surfaced, blood would come out of my nose. anyway, after getting my "ear syringe" a few months back there's no more left ear equalizing issues but now everytime i surfaced even from shallow depth (5m) i can feel like popping sound in my sinus, as if a reverse block or something, i would feel pain near my eyebrow area and sometimes feel dizzy because of it.. any idea how to cure this?

Jim, seeing an ENT specialist would help to see if your sinus problems has worsened (I hope not). To bge sure and safe, just go la.

sinus may not manifest itself in other ways... so only when there's a substantial pressure difference we can feel it.

I have dived with a mild runny nose and took precautions going down slowly but experienced no trouble equalising.

I have also dived without any indication of runny nose or sinus but the moment I went deeper, my whole face was painful. It was scary but after 2-3 times equalising it went away completely... and I continued with the dive.  However it was enuff to put me off diving for the rest of the trip (luckily it wasn't a hard-core dive trip).  Back in KL went to see the doctor... did an x-ray and saw the infected cavities... he poked me in the nose with a swab and left it there for about 20 minutes before pulling it back out, gave some antibiotics and that was it...

so jim, my first bet is sinus

Eh myself its different. Difficult to equalize at shallow depth. But above 20m when there's more pressure its easier to equalize? So how la?

Easy to cure that, bro. Hold your breath and blow your BCD from 20m.

This may sound like a joke, but i got this tip from an Instructor in Perhentian last year. If you know you have a slight sinus problem, he says you should start equalizing even before you get in the water. That means now and then, hold your nose and blow (not too hard laa...). I have equalizing problems from day 1 I start diving and even get nose bleeds a few times. Surprisingly, this tip works & I can equalize easier now. But I don't think this will work if you have serious sinus problems, cold or blocked nose  :)

I think you should see a doctor, probably you've got sinus infection. Might need to take antibiotics to fix that. I'm suffering from that too after last weeks perhentain trip, frontal forehead and right eye brow area suffering from slight pain especially when sujud while praying.

Well, well HoleMaster...seems to me that u're a natural born DEEP SEA DIVER!!!  ;D ;D ;D

Jokes aside, there are several ways of equalizing your middle ears if u r unable to equalize using just one technique. Based on your difficult experience, my best bet on ur problem would be a sinus problem. I would agree with u that with enuff ambient pressure, it would be much easier to equalize at deeper depths as opposed to shallower depths. Taik telinga?? Highly unlikely...

My two cents' worth: try equalizing early and frequently, but a visit to an ENT specialist would at least clear your conscience on your ongoing problem.

a good tip i received years ago was when going down, to have short breaths and equalise at every breaths... been doing it and helped me a lot.  And when i still have a problem even with this way, i will just descend at a slower rate.

Thanks Doc. If i see the specialist, should i say that i hv difficulty equalising at shallow depth? Or something else more appropriate?
