I am just curious.

During pool training, we are told to remove our mask, and swim for a few meters. The trouble is, some of us use contact lenses. Heard some story (whether it's telltale or urban legend, i dont know) that contact lense can really get stuck in the eye and can cause a major issue. True or not?

Any thoughts are most welcome.

I use contacts when I dive and without fail I'll flood the mask and do mask clearing on each dive.

I usually squint a bit when I do that to prevent the lenses from displacing (either out or to other positions)...

Problems anticipated/ went thru: lenses move from the optimal position
Solution:
1. Don't panic, one eye vision is sufficient (provided it too does not displace)
2. Blink- the fluid layer can push the lense back into position

The thing about it getting stuck is when it displace far posteriorly... but usually..blinking would displace it back...

This is my experience...and it has happened several times especially when I started diving...Hope that is helpful

I actually saw that the lenses actually moved right up towards the inner part of the eyes...and a major pain to pull it out. Not a nice thing to have when you're having fun in the water I'd say...... :

wat do u mean if you go LASIK and 6 mths can't dive...why? It has some adaptation period? Why scared? Pls enlighten me a bit..... :-/

According to my friend ho went for LASIK consultation... they recommend no diving for 6 months due to the pressure during diving.

I'll check with my ophthalmology colleage to confirm this.

not so sure bout the contacts sticking to your eyes. but whenever I do mask clearing I close my eyes to prevent my contacts getting in touch with saltwater

at MIDE when i at d lasik booth they said only 1 month after surgery kenot dive... bone will check..

as for the contact lens, just closed your eyes when do mask clearing and ask your buddy to be beside you and soft knock at ur mask after u clear the water inside the mask.

make sure ur buddy stand beside u if not, u be clearing and ascending at the same time... hehehe

I dont allow my Scuba Diver student to wear contact lens & I dont encourage others to wear contact lens while diving.

Salt ... Sand.... in between lens & eye are not good, our eyes are very sensitive ... ask any doctor about it.

There are cases that divers get eye injury due to contact lenses.

Get prescription lens for the mask, as on the boat have plastic frame spec ... cheep & cheerful.

I don't wear contact lenses but I'm using glasses tho...ones MUST have perfect eyesight [highlight]before[/highlight] they become pilots, once they've become one then like everyone else - we're subjected to 'wear and tear' gak....so it's ok to use it for us to [highlight]find[/highlight] our runways to LAND lorr!

i've been using contacts ever since i started diving. so far it's been good to me and i've tried removing my mask and swim underwater with my eyes open and so far so good as long as the bubbles doesn't get into my eyes so much..

anyway yes i agree with snafu that it's better to get a prescription mask but for those who wants to wear contacts, i would recommend them to get the RIGHT size contacts to wear.. most of the optometrists here only tell u the power for ur contacts but they do not at all advise u on the right DIAMETER and the BASE CURVE (which is why in some countries contacts need a precription).. both of which would make ur life wearing contacts more enjoyable

else u might want to go for GPP lens which doesn't move much heh

I was a contact lense user too for many years until I took up diving in May 07. Did my mask clearing with my eyes closed

, feels awkward but yes, can be done... but I am more concern with fine sand or particles that get onto the contact lense. That's why I did Epi-Lasik in June and now can see perfect vision

There are few types of Lasik available in the market, with different recovery period required especially if diving. Conventional Lasik involved in creating a corneal flap prior to lasik procedure will definately require about 6 - 8 months recovery period before diving.

EPI-Lasik do not require any corneal flap to be created prior to Lasik procedure, so, can dive after 1 month no problemo

...... going to Tioman on 11 Aug for AOW, no more contact lense ..... yay!!!

1 mth after i did my lasik......i sign up for my open water & in 2 mths i'm oredy underwater.
i always hv fear openin my eyes underwater, even now.......sensitive eyes i guess
closing my eyes during mask clearing is kind of norm.

i've experienced once swimming in the pool where without realising i lost my contact lense.....so i guess it does comes out while ur in the water

p/s: it should not take more than 1 mth for ur eyes to recover after doin ur lasik.
It cost me RM3700 for both eyes + RM100 for 1st visit consultation.

Yeah!! point noted...I don't really like contact lenses either... I bought the disposable contact lenses when I first went for my open water dive and all are still in tact, coz my instructor give me prescription lens

Yes, a pilot who requires corrective lenses to see must have a spare pair of glasses nearby (usually in their bag).It's endorsed on their flying license

Going slightly off topic, but LASIK is a big no no for pilots.They're required to heal for 6 months to a year before being allowed to fly again.The reasons range from colour blindness to unnecessary risks associated with thin corneas in a depressurised environment.

Personally, I find the new contact lenses (daily soft lens) works well in my dives, but the need to moisturize them is also a concern.If they are dry, then you are more prone to minute particle intrusion.

My 2 sen worth ......
