Can we start an emergency fund for divers?
« on: September 15, 2007, 01:09:52 AM »

Hi everyone,

This is for open discussion. I believe 50% or more among us do not have insurance cover for diving. And since emergency treatment for say DCS can be rather expensive, even in Malaysia, can we like start a common fund just for such purpose.

If we each contribute RM20 a month, I think we can accummulate a sizable amount for emergency use by members. We can make this interest free, since everyone has a contribution.....

Perhaps two outstanding members among our MODs can be signatory to the emergency account, and we can establish a rule that the fund can be availed once a dive doctor certifies the diver does suffer DCS and requires treatment.

Perhaps we can also pull in insurance companies to be sponsors?

its a good idea, but we have Divers Alert Network (DAN).  If one month you want to collect RM20 so in a year it will be RM240.  Be a DAN member and all diving related incident/accident will be covered. visit danseap.org

I just checked out DAN USA and DAN Asia Pacific. There is such a marked difference in membership as well as insurance rates.

In DAN USA, the following two membership options are available:

Individual Membership (US$29/year)
Family Membership (US$44/year)
For an additional US$15 per year, you can add as many eligible family members to your membership as you desire. Includes the same valuable benefits listed under Individual Membership.
* For non-US memberships, add US$5

DAN Insurance

Preferred Plan: For an additional US$70 per year,
Master Plan: For only an additional US$35 per year includes:
Standard Plan: For only an additional US$25 per year includes:

So if I buy from DAN USA, Family membership plus preferred plan, my total cost is US$44 + US$5 + US$70 = US$119 (RM415.31 based on Friday (14 Sept 2007) exchange rate of RM3.4798)

In DAN Asia Pacific,

Single Membership = A$60
Family Membership = A$85
Add A$10 for postage outside Australia

Dive Injury (Treatment) Insurance
Standard Plan = A$60
Master Plan = A$75
Preferred Plan = A$125
Optional Fast Processing Charge of A$10

So if I buy from DAN Asia Pacific, Family membership plus preferred plan, my total cost is A$85 + A$10 + A$125 = A$220 (RM642.40 based on Friday (14 Sept 2007) exchange rate of RM2.9183)

The difference between rates charged by DAN USA and DAN Asia Pacific is RM227.  :(

Unfortunately for Malaysian divers, we have no choice but to buy from DAN Asia Pacific because DAN USA membership is not offered to many Asian countries... [-(

As for my suggestion of a common emergency divers fund (CEDF), it is to help those divers in emergency who do not have DAN insurance, and are suddenly caught out. On the long term, all divers are off course encouraged to buy DAN. Think of it like a World Bank, helping developing countries.... :D :D :D

yeah, i was comparing both of them earlier.  DAN US is offered to US residents, meaning, all u need is a US address. after ur application, u can change back to your address in MY :)

i've confirmed it with DAN HQ :)

PS: apart from the financial part, there is not limit on depth for DAN US, where as DAN SEAP, max 40m :)

Good idea but we have to think the legal aspect as well. To collect funds from members we may be liable under both BAFIA & SIA Act as MUW is not license under either Act. Further we are not even a society nor club.....

Suggest to get from DAN or through dive agencies. Do know that PADI & NAUI assist their members in buying them. As for local insurance company, use to know 1 company that have an insurance scheme for divers years ago. Cant remeber which one nor the scheme is still around....
