Divers check your air quality!
« on: December 23, 2010, 05:00:06 PM »

Just came back from Mabul.....a few days ago an incident happened! And it happened to 1 of my machas larr  ;)

Divers went to Sipadan, 1st dive...surfaced...an Instructor unconscious but breathing wif bubbles & saliva splurring from mouth.
1 off the leisure divers just completed Rescue course...followed steps...but no O2 onboard, Dive guide reactions not efficient...borrow O2 from another dive boat nearby....evacuate victim to Semporna.

Divers came back...plan another Sipadan dive after lunch....descent 18-20 meters...in few minutes both divers surfaced...complaint feeling Narc & experiencing headache...cant even climb onboard...both divers dizziness & about to faint...same process have to borrow O2 from others  :D  felt better & able to speak when administer O2...evacuate both victims to Semporna again.

-Instructor hospitalised
-Both divers outpatient after Med Check / assesment

Contamination Air?

Fellas please ensure your air quality & Medical O2 onboard

 ;)

The only way that the air quality can be assured is if the dive centre does an air purity test twice a year.

To comply to EN 12021 or EN 132 the air purity test results must be as follows:

Carbon monoxide (CO) max. 15 ml/m³
Carbon dioxide (CO2) max. 500 ml/m³
Water vapour and condensate max. 25 mg/m³
The air must be without odour or taste.
Oil Mist (droplets or mist) shall not exceed 0.5 mg.m3.

or if you choose to comply to OSHA Grade D

Carbon Monoxide (ppm):10
Carbon Dioxide (ppm):1000
Oil (Condensed Hydrocarbons) mg/m3: 5
Odor:   lack of noticeable odor

Now you have the information, the question is what are you going to do about it?
Boycott dive centres which do not have proof of a scheduled air purity test by a 3rd party?  :D :D :D

Something for everyone to ponder.  :D :D

Superb feedback la kimseng  ;)

We are living here in Malaysia there is no body of Gov or NGO ka  or 3rd Party monitoring this & DC applying these methods too...if Im not mistaken in the nineties Pro Dive Langkawi does practise air purity test.

Doing air quality like how we learn from Open Water Course>>>turn on tank valve a bit or smell from purge secondary reg make sure no curry smell  :D :D :D :D or funky smell.

Even this basic things that we learned can avoid us getting into trouble.

Boycott  DC wif this kind of incident :D :D :D is not the culture here   ;)  the only boycott happens here is dive pricing $$$ differences  :D :D :D :D

( If only Uncle Sammy Velly dives )
