Dad drowns while giving scuba diving lesson
« on: March 31, 2010, 09:29:06 AM »

KUALA LUMPUR: A 41-year-old American died in a condominium swimming pool in Bukit Damansara here while teaching his sons to scuba dive. In the 4pm incident, Paul Franz Gorter, an experienced scuba diver, was demonstrating how to scuba dive to his sons, aged 12 and 17. When he failed to surface from the pool, the sons alerted their mother then rushed him to Damansara Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Gorter, who worked with an oil company, had been living in the country for the past 19 years... :$

Read the article but didn't know that he was teaching his son to scuba dive. Very sad to hear it and it just shows that nothing in Scuba can be taken lightly. An experience diver in a swimming pool had an accident. We newbies must always remember that this is still an extreme sport with a whole set of risk.

Always dive safe.

Very sad news  :sad10:

A death in scuba diving is always one too many.

Let's hope we can learn from why this happened so other Divers (and families) can avoid this heartache in the future.

My name is Sean Gorter, and I am Paul Franz Gorter's son.

He did not die giving a scuba diving lesson. We were leisure swimming. He was not 41, but 45 going on 46. It did not take place in Damansara, but Sri Penaga. He was here for the past 21 years. I do not know what kind of news reporter would post up wrong information, but I would like to give that one a stiff middle finger. :angry4: :angry4: :angry4: :angry4: :angry4: :angry4:

Please correct the New Straits Times if you can, I do not know how.

Condolences to you and family Sean.

Really a shame with the reporting. This is not the first time and probably not the last such bad reporting will be published.
