Malaysia is #11 among shark product-making nations
The End of the Line?, a new report by Oceana and WildAid, says that Malaysia is one of the top shark product-making nations of the world. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimated that in 2004, Malaysia produced 25,154 metric tonnes of shark-based products. This includes, shark leather, shark cartilage medicine, shark teeth jewellery, shark liver oil and sharks fins.
The FAO also estimated that the annual number of shark catches has grown by over 300% since 1950. Because the whole shark is often not brought in, it’s assumed that the catch amount is heavily underestimated.
